Players breaching C-19 protocols (Merged Threads)

Other clubs don’t seem to be having issues. Obviously some clubs feel the guidance is already weak and have enforced their own rules. Not guidance.

Or there are several clubs with Hull FC's protocols, but it has surfaced at Hull first and has the potential to surface at others too.

Good to know you agree there needs to be stricter rules though

Tommy, that should never have been from a business point of view. V Covid. They are intelligent enough to do what’s right. You don’t need a pen pusher to sanitise your hands.

As literally everything throughout this pandemic has shown, you can't rely on people's intelligence alone. Especially so with professional sports which need full rosters of staff to stay uninfected to keep going.

The League has a responsibility to all of the players and staff in a way that clubs don't have to eachother necessarily and therefore it needs to legislate for all the teams imo.

That's to say, Hull FC or any other club being slack has the potential to seriously impact other clubs and the league detrimentally. So the league has to legislate to prevent that.

So you agree the league needs to have its own central guidance that goes above and beyond the government rules and guidelines for normal folk?

I think we (ie rugby league) do have our own guidance don't we?  As far as I'm aware, the sport developed protocols in discussion with PHE/the government which were particular to RL.  Some principles will be similar to other environments - the concept of bubbles for example - but then there will be more specialised aspects around contact for instance.

So who do we expect to take this responsibility on? The RFL/SL/SLE.

The responsibility sits with the club. As is does with all commerce.

Stop passing the buck.

I clarified further in my edit, apologies.

Clearly there seems to be a gap in that though. Huddersfield's coach has come out and said it too. To the minutiae of "you should avoid supermarkets in person" etc. to 1 physio per each training group.

By that I mean whatever we have agreed has to be more than just whatever the government says for the rest of us plus weekly testing.

I agree wholeheartedly in what your saying. As I said some clubs have gone further than that guidance in order to protect/preserve the integrity of the sport.

As for all businesses the guidance is minimal. You should act accordingly to the environment as a business.

It shouldn’t need a separate body to enforce that.Surely!

In that case its better to see Super League as the business with the clubs as sub sections of that. Super League should then set the rules with individual clubs able to, if they need to based on their own circumstances and facilities, go above that.

There is also a massive financial burden for all this. Each test costs £75 (nasal and throat swab) Salford have had to have the extra tests at considerable cost. So far their tests have been negative and the club was unfortunately caught up in another clubs misery, but this extra cost for a small community club is hard to take.

Fingers crossed it doesn't spread to anyone else at Saints (or indeed Cas).

Have Salford reported any cases this week following the Hull infections?

All negative so far, I assume they will complete another test this week before returning to the normal routine

Now Saints have a positive test- a non playing member of staff

This doesn't surprise me really as over the past fortnight we have had a jump in cases in St Helens.  Our per 100,000 rate was at 1.1 two weeks ago; it's now at 14.2.  We have had something like 40 new cases a week over the last two weeks, which isn't many as a total figure but represents 40 times the number we had been having per week for what seemed like ages.

It’s hard to assess as testing has increased in all areas which will put that number up.

Not to that extent.  Over the last 34 days the UK tests per day have ranged from a low of 99,000 (28th July) to a high of 206,000 (31st July) and has averaged just under 160,000 tests per day.  In this time the positive cases per 100,000 of population has ranged from 0.66 to 2.12.  The highpoint in this metric was on the 14th of August.

The % of positive returns has also remained relatively flat ranging from 0.52% to 0.85% of tests taken.

These are the official numbers while the ONS survey which surveys households outside of the official figures also suggests that cases have levelled off after a small increase in early July.

Yes those are National stats not local.

I was replying to your comment that testing had increased in all areas. Did you mean all areas of St Helens?

Ignoring the obvious and vital issue of people dying...  The very livelihoods of individuals and the entire game are at stake.  I hope everyone knows what they are doing.

Yep, looking at it purely in the context of RL - I was happy to see Shaun Wane getting quite angry about this, talking about if we get plenty more cancellations this my affect the World Cup for England.

As you say, this could affect clubs, livelihoods and I don't think it is being melodramatic to say the future of the game - we need to take this seriously.

All I have seen are the figures reported in the local paper, which takes them from NHS test and trace.  We've had a big leap in absolute numbers over the last two weeks which has resulted in our rate being as I previously described.  We haven't got big numbers but the leap has been a big one.  The rise has now been further localised to the Eccleston Park area of St Helens (because the data can now be that specific, which is a good thing) and so the council is leafleting houses in that area.  Needless to say it is those in their 20s who are providing most of the positive tests.

Jackson Hastings and Luther Burrell are set to be banned for two weeks for breaching Covid-19 protocols.

Heard RFL have been tasked with reporting breaches at games, including fist bumping and handshakes.

These players can only earn an income if the sport is permitted to continue under these restrictions.

Very shoddy behaviour, Mr Hastings and Burrell.
