More postponements

Recommended Posts

We are reaching a point that the season is serious jeopardy. Catalans match against Leeds on 7 September must now be in threat and perhaps Wakefield's fixture at the weekend.

But we need to get through the season for Sky money. I don't envy Super League having to rearrange all of these fixtures. It's only going to get harder as we go along with more sides having played twice.

No criticism of Super League when it comes to integrity this season. Let's just get through the season by working together if we can for the good of the sport.

My gut feeling has always been to get this season done ASAP, and was against extending it into January or whatever. We’ll do what we always do and muddle through but it doesn’t help when all but two clubs weren’t playing at the weekend.

In some ways it’s quite impressive that we can rearrange fixtures so quickly but we may need to be even more flexible.

Re-arranging fixtures gets increasingly complicated the fewer games remain though.  But maybe by then all clubs will have had their outbreak!

The Wakey game V. Wire is planned to go ahead, due to negative tests from all Wakey players, and only 2 needing to isolate from the Catalans game.

Likewise, the suggestion is that Leeds will play Catalans, as it will be 2 weeks after the positive tests; I guess that very much depends on there not being a further significant number of positives for Catalans though!

cant see the full programme getting completed. will they revert to average points to get final positions? not sure how many game sky need to keep contract complete. also having one team short makes a problem anyway.

Firstly, best wishes to those who’ve come down to it. Hopefully, they’re not suffering, they’re asymptomatic and they can get rid of the virus quickly.

The chopping and changing isn’t ideal and if there’s more of these postponements, which is probably likely given we’ve had a couple in a matter of weeks, it’s going to get very convoluted, confusing and compromising the scheduled finish of the year. It’s a major worry that any reduction in the season sees a return expected of the TV money and we know how vital that is to clubs.

I’m surprised 2 Wakey players need to self isolate.........I didn’t think any got near to any Dragons players at the weekend.

Do the Dragons players have to self isolate for 2 weeks? If so, that doesn’t leave them any prep time for the Leeds game, bringing that into doubt

That’s the spirit, though there must be an even worse angle you can find if you try harder?

What a strange response. We have just had to rearrange another SL game and are only three or so rounds in.

We are doing something wrong. This isn't working.

But sure, blame fans for looking for an 'angle'.

Sky wouldn’t have paid for that though sadly, so wasn’t an option.

9 rounds X 5 games = 45 broadcasting slots , given the games they'd already had , they wouldn't have been far off the contracted number

I think they wanted the full season finished though, not a truncated (and therefore meaningless) one?

Why blame the clubs or players though, any more than any member of the public who tests positive? These aren’t multi millionaires, they still need to go to the shops, take their kids to childcare so they can train etc - it’s bound to spread just as it does within the general public.

You seem to be having your own argument.

I haven't blamed anyone. But this isn't working. We need to understand why it isn't working, and we need to understand very quickly.

How is our failure rate versus the NRL and the UK Premier League?

We appear to be struggling.

20 positive results over two months according to this. Read earlier they've also had 14 in the last week after players have gone back to training after their jollies. Not a great start for SL though

Thanks. Do you know how they avoided postponements?

Truncated or loop fixtures , both the same Scenario , does that mean both are meaningless ?

Yes.  Millionaire footballers swan off overseas and expect things to be ok.  They think they are too big to go bust.

This virus is very very contagious so it's does happen, but for our players it's financially devastating if things get out of hand. They really need to be on their guard.

On a wider level it really still seems very dangerous to bring large groups together.

As for our future fixtures... I suggested some time back to scrap the Cup and limit the season and have a long pre season next year and another 20/22 round season.  We need to prepare for the World Cup.

Too many games , should have been UK based 9 round mini season , this is going to seriously compromise the WC

This is true and a huge worry. The World Cup is a huge event with big potential and late rearrangement could do damage.

This is probably why we are determined to finish the season by the end of November.
