The great thing about that article is that it will be quite insightful as it includes the line 'Thompson was rested for Canterbury’s clash against Canberra last week' and so it must have been written in the future.

I have been told by a Saints fan at work today that Thompson is homesick and coming back. Anyone else heard about this?

Yes.  He is coming back on the same plane as Brett Kenny and Ben Barba.

A bit understandable. He's living on his own, his girlfriend and his family can't get over, he's only allowed out of the house to go to training, the players aren't allowed to go to a bar, restaurant or coffee shop. Doesn't sound the best of an experience!

Still sounds better than living in St Helens 😁

Wot like here?  Always assuming professional rugby players here are sticking to the rules in an attempt to save their businesses and livelihoods??

Sounds like he's had a tough start. He is quite small for an NRL prop. It was noticeable in the World Club Challenge, Walmsley and the two starting Sydney props were all more physically imposing and Thompson had the least impact of the four. Looks like Canterbury have similar concerns which may be why he has been shifted to 13.

If he does return to the UK, no guarantee it will be to Saints. His departure was not on the greatest of terms. And Warrington have tried to sign him before, offering a far larger wage than Saints offered. Of course, a lot would depend on what room Wire have on their salary cap.

He knew all that when he went. This is a tough game for tough players.

Did he?

Without checking the dates he may well have signed for CBBs before the Covid-19 crisis took hold in the U.K..

As for the tough game, tough players comment, how would you know anything of how tough the game is, here or there or whether a Thompson is a tough enough bloke.

Thompson may be smaller than the average prop in the NRL but he has other attributes to make up for it including great leg speed. Remember Jai Arrow played prop in State of Origin and he is no larger than Thompson.

Its bound to be tough out there.  A new recruit in a new country would look at a social side with his new teamates to help him settle and look forward to having family over... none of these are available at the moment.

But if he gets through this I am sure he can be a success and when he looks back on his career I am sure we wouldn't want to be labelled as someone who couldn't crack the NRL. I hope he sticks it out.

He was going to leave at the end of this season (Nov) but chose to go earlier, so yes he did know. However I’m not in his shoes so can’t comment on his experience, it’s probably been b0ll0cks though to be fair.

If he does come home did Saints have a first right of refusal clause in the contract to release him? Bc I'd have him at Leeds tomorrow lol

Not Leeds. He'd be homesick, even after his compulsory quarantine.

A lot of assumptions being made and questions being asked.

1. That any of this is true.

2. That he is homesick

3. That he is coming back early

4. That his rumoured return really is because of him being homesick.

5. That he and his agent didn't know or find out about the welfare issues involved in relocating to Australia.

6. That his club there are or are not looking after his welfare.

7. That his income is so low that he cannot afford to fly one or more of his loved ones out for a break ( Kayak currently showing £1650 return London -Sydney)

8. May seem harsh in these snowflake times, but it has to be said. If at first you don't succeed, try, try and try again, give up.

9. He'd be well advised in my view to seek professional counselling. He has an opportunity to change his like for the much better. He won't get that opportunity again.

Actions have consequences and we can't all walk away when things don't go our way.
