TRL Helpdesk: UK break ideas

Recommended Posts

A week off in a couple of weeks, so time to start looking for somewhere to go.

Ideally within 3 hrs/150 miles max of home (Hebden Bridge), open to any ideas of city or countryside breaks, from location suggestions to specific accommodation recommendations. We're desperate to get away, but completely uninspired as to where!

Please view my photos.

Check your eyesight with a trip to Barnard Castle. :kolobok_wink:

Actually, it is quite nice there.

If we are still allowed in, then I like Edinburgh. There is a lot to see, it is by the sea, and close to wonderful countryside.

Edinburgh rugby union are good to watch. Also lots of football teams if you like this also.

A few years ago, we stayed here: https://www.coalportstation.com/

The train carriage thing was good fun - and they are ridiculously comfortable - but the most surprising thing was quite how many nice places/things to do were on the doorstep there.

we know a lovely guesthouse in blackpool- the owner looks like fred west and his son looks like charles mansun - and due to a fire last year most of the rooms are discounted as they still smell of smoke a bit- but apart from that its bang on- some great photos of bernie winters and reginald dixon in the dining room and only a short walk from the prize bingo offering a 24 pack of diet coke (slightly out of date) for 2 and a half wins

I would definitely recommend a week in the Lake District. Maybe slightly away from the usual main places

Even with COVID-19 around, the Lakes will probably be rammed, so definitely away from the usual main places.

Cheers. Durham area was under consideration, so could be a good call. 👍

Lakes also under consideration, but suspect you may well be right, even midweek.

That actually looks pretty good. Not long since we were last in that part of the world though, so looking for somewhere different.

Just had a break in the Trossochs, Loch Fyne lovely area. Benmore gardens are worth a visit.

Love Northumberland, Seahouses area is a great place to stay, not far from Alnwick

This place at the edge of the Trossachs, near Callander, is a fantastic place if they have spaces. Very central to get almost anywhere but absolutely reliant on your own car.

My sis and bro-in-law own a lovely B&B in Dumfries if anyone is interested anytime.  (Full Scottish or English breakfast to die for).  All covid rules strictly adhered to.

In the blink of an eye it could all be taken away.  Be grateful always.

It's nice around there too. We had a couple of days in that area on our two week caravan tour of Scotland a couple of years ago.

Depends on your budget, but I've had a few short breaks in Landmark Trust properties. In general the value for money is in off-season bookings of larger locations, as the cost per head goes down.

There's a Palladian pigsty.

Or a triangular Gothic Temple.

Or, er, a Pineapple.

That looks interesting. Not sure how viable many of them will be for just two of us, but definitely bookmarked for future reference. 👍

Depends a lot on location and time of year, but the smaller places (plenty of two-bed properties) cost more per head. The larger buildings, for a family/friends gathering (maybe not with COVID around), can work out at £15-20 per person per night.

On the other hand, given the current situation, this may be a very good time for bargain prices you wouldn't get normally, so aim higher than you normally might and see what's on offer.

Whitby never let anyone down.

I love Whitby, but the last couple of times I've gone it wasn't full-on holiday season, but the centre was still more crowded than I found comfortable.

I'd be more inclined to stay in Robin Hood's Bay tbh if over that way, I've always preferred it to Whitby.

The Landmark Trust's Palladian Pigsty I posted a pic of earlier is just outside Robin Hood's Bay. My dad's stayed there and loved it.

Come to sunny Bubonic Bolton!

Only joking although north Bolton around Rivington and Winter Hill is a hidden gem if you’d like walking around the start of the Pennines.

Clitheroe in Lancashire is off the beaten track and can be quite nice for little shops etc - probably too near Hebden though for a getaway!

A complete change of scenery might be a U.K. city break as I read an article that with remote working many hotels that usually cater for the business market are offering deals.

If you're in Bolton town centre and fancy a visit to Bolton Abbey, it is a mere 15-hour stroll, according to Google Maps. :kolobok_wink:
