Didnt hitler say the same thing at stalingrad (or at least something similar concerning the words "winter" "too far gone" "shouldnt consider retreating")..

Sorry but with the thread drift i thought i would just at Godwins law in for good measure!

Thete was I promoting a thread on Summet Rugby and it ends up in a study of etymology...

It serves me right for bringing in Torchy The Battery Boy and Four Feather Falls a few posts back...

In other news, an erudite consensus suggests its better in Summer and/or we are too entrenched to change back.

This does leave a question as to whether we are failing to capitalise on the change.

I hear what you are saying, but football fans watch, and players play in, the same towns all through the winter and nobody says it's unbearable. In fact some of the best attendances are in December and January. Maybe rugby league grounds were even more decrepit than football ones in the past and that played a part, but most nowadays are much better, and player preparation and kit is much better too.

To be clear, I'm not saying we should go back - there's no compelling argument for it - but I'm sure we could go back on the weather front if it was deemed necessary.

Well we could go back and play wearing skis and snow shoes all of which means we couod accept TWP back into the fold.

No there is little logic to doing so and as you point out no compelling argument.

Then again football is stil considering the change too.

Now if we could allow ice skates TWP might find some suitable Canadians, and might even win a game or two! Got to say though, the thoughts of an Ontario winter ice storm is making me shiver, Google “Heavy Rescue 401” for some video footage of a typical Toronto winter, and that’s every winter.

Very common to hear people use the word in Sheffield when talking about people complaining about the cold, or a mild dose of "the cold".. probably less so now though to be fair.

My Dad used this to describe someone who felt the cold and also said central heating made you nesh.

but also if a footballer shirked a tackle he’d say that he’s neshed that.

Really? I know there’ll be a few loudmouths but don’t most people in the town support both clubs?

Seriously not in Halifax

You're still not a proper Yorkshireman, You were complaining about the cold, instead of telling everybody how much better the cold was in Yorkshire and how cold was so much better back in your day.

The cold was better back when we played winter rugby in January, rather than like now when we play  summer rugby in january......

The younger generation of fans would never contemplate a return to the traditional season, personally those winters from 76-96 gave me great sporting memories ,the change came at a time when family summer commitments were at a high for those in my supporters group and gradually we drifted from regular to occasional. Loved the way the conditions levelled the game and always felt teams had to have everything to negotiate the winter before the harder tracks of spring but fingers crossed for crowds back soon because once the habit is broken people will replace with other avenues

Well it is easier on the body and has far more teams at "social levels"

Yes I've mentioned it before, the drive for excellence and the hoops that need jumping through to even start a team these days have killed the pub teams off (Along with the pubs dying)

Absolutely. Though I think pubs dying have more to do with it more generally.

There's a great piece of history in my favourite Pub in Wakefield with the Pub rugby league fixtures up on the wall. I'm actually a bit gutted I never got to play in such a competition.

I don't see a lot of NRL games postponed for snow, floods or, for that matter, any reason at all.

They're a fair bit nearer the equator than us.

NFL - fair play to them.  They just crack on with it.

Not really, typically January and February are our worst winter months. Only 1 regular season week (mind you each team only have 8 home games) is held in January, and the rest of the games are playoffs (easier to endure crappy weather for that type of game) and the super bowl is always held in an indoor stadium or warm weather stadium (minus 1 year in NYC).

There's a reason why we dont have an outdoor sport playing its regular season in those months, and why basketball is such a huge sport in the midwest, with some areas having the high school basketball game being the main community event instead of the high school football game.

I got to play in the West Yorkshire Sunday League, Yorkshire League & Humberside league during my playing career, 1977 to 2004.

WINTER BRRRR remember playing in the freezing cold on Clapham Common one Sunday morning in January 1981 and diving into the corner to score a try and landing in a pile of dog pooh 😞 I had to poor a bucket of hold water all over myself to try and get all the dog s--t off and to make it worse the hot water in the showers was broken afterwards.

As a  Community club secretary in the winter season you had to be a better weatherman than the forecasters on BBC

Starting on thursday evening, weather watching till sat night and then dragging yourself from family for  field inspections at 7 am on  sat/sunday mornings . arguing if you had to with Local Authority ' Parkies  ' as to field fitness and trying to persuade a local ref that the mass of mud in the middle was playable or  more often than not that that corner of the field that was always frozen would be playable by midday.......and then  when all that failed ,telling your lads that when they turned up the game had to be called off . Trying to phone most before they came down and of course trying to stop your travelling opponents  even if they had still got stuck with a coach bill. Even giving your lads a deflating lift back home.

Never sure why the Pennine League remained traditional winter beyond that streak of Yorkshire grit/stubborn  but for me taking all the above pressures of the shoulders of the average Community club secretary certainly helped them in being able simply to put teams on the park for a fairly more certain fixture.

Would the club secretary from then that is still around  now or  those of today take on all the above today ?

Not a chance .  And without those administrators a move back would kill  TGG.................

I'd have loved to have played for the Wagon against the Redoubt or the Swan with Two Necks or the Black Rock. We'd smash them 😉
