  • Tommy Leuluai reflects on Wigan’s 58-12 victory over Salford.
  • The half-back talks about remaining consistent, having the right attitude and looks ahead to Friday’s game against St Helens.
  • Leuluai: “There have been games where we have got the lead and then dropped the intensity, but we kept it right for the whole 80.”

Tommy Leuluai says Wigan Warriors need to continue the type of display they produced against Salford Red Devils throughout the rest of the 2020 season.

Adrian Lam’s side recorded an impressive 58-12 victory over the Red Devils at the Totally Wicked Stadium to tighten their grip in the top four.

Despite the win, Leuluai is remaining grounded and cites it is a performance that they need to repeat.

He said: “We have to take into account that they (Salford) rested a few so we can’t get too carried away, but it was the performance that we have been searching for. I am pleased we put in that performance, but we’ve done it before where we have gone on a run and then had a little hiccup, so it is about continuing this for a long period.

“It was our most consistent performance. There have been games where we have got the lead and then dropped the intensity, but we kept it right for the whole 80.”

The 35-year-old knows that if the Warriors build on that game then they will enjoy a strong end to the season.

“We are looking at ourselves, trying to play intense rugby for a full game because we haven’t really done it. We are quite confident that if we can put in that consistent performance then we will be there and there abouts.”

Adding comments about Friday’s comprehensive triumph, Leuluai was pleased with the display of the entire team.

“Everyone played their part and did their bit. Brad Singleton was good and Clubby (Tony Clubb) was great off the bench – it was a great team performance.”

One of the stand-out players was Bevan French, who went over for a hat-trick, as well as two assists.

Leuluai admits from day one he knew that the full-back would be an exciting addition to the squad.

“The first couple of times I saw him in training last year I knew he was a special player. He’s someone who can do things that not many others can do. Even playing alongside him, it’s great to watch – we are lucky to have him with the way he is playing.”

Wigan take on St Helens next Friday, in a game where Leuluai believes they will need to be at their best again.

“It’s good to know we can do it at a high intensity. It will be much harder next week, with more pressure. They are a good team and we haven’t really performed against them for a long time, so we are looking to change that.”
