What happened way back when he moved up at Leeds from Head Coach to Director of Rugby❓

Vaguely remember he was to make a return as Leeds' Head Coach after a period of time.

Don't think it happened.

Can anyone enlighten me please❓

He coached the Tykes R U team out of Headingley. Then moved on to coach Fev who improved dramatically under his coaching. For a period the best team in the Championship beating S.L. side Cas in the R.L.cup and putting a brave performance up against a strong Wigan side in the next round.Plenty worse coaches than Powell in S.L..

2010-2012 he had the best budget and resources in the league. From 3 Grand Finals and 3 NRC Comps, he won one from six and has form for blowing the big one.... repeated again three years ago in SL. Ridding himself of the "nearly man" tag will always be the monkey on his shoulder....

Am a late arrival to this thread, but always thought this verdict was a bit harsh on Powell. He led Fev to the top of the league and the Grand Final 3 years in a row. We lost to Halifax in a freakish game for many reasons in 2010, hammered Sheffield in 2011, and then lost to them in 2012 at a time when they were a very good side.

On top of that, Powell won what was arguably the most important Fev match in the last 20 years - certainly the most talked about anyway - in the Challenge Cup in 2012.

He didn't have much luck either...the fire in 2010 and then Hardman dropping a high ball that we saw him catch 99% of the time; losing Smeaton a couple of days before the 2012 final and having to ask Nathan Chappel to mark Menzie Yere (also losing Hardaker a couple of days before the  2017 final for Cas).

I just think the sample size of "big games" is just too small, you have to judge a coach on his body of work. He won a lot of semi finals, which also count as big games...beating Leigh in the 2012 semi final after we were about 14-0 down at half time comes to mind.

Am under no illusions that the "nearly tag" man won't go away though, unless he gets Cas or another team to a big final and wins it.

Soon to be announced as new head coach of Hull FC

When you say "soon", I'm guessing you mean as soon as Brett Hodgson's tenure is up?

I'd go long with that. Personality wise from what we see on the TV he comes across as a very bitter man but coaching wise I think he is up there with the best. You only have to look what he has done with Cas and his capability to take cast off's or players maybe classed as average and get the best out of them to see that he is very good.

In a similar vein to the Halifax nearly signed Iestyn Harris story, I remember when Campbell was very keen to get rid of Powell and we had tentitive talks with him before Cas came knocking. I can only imagine what might have been and he has gone on to do a great job at cas although coaches do seem to have cycles at clubs and his time may be coming to an end.
