Used car buying..the new normal?

Recommended Posts

Given the good news about Cazoo and the RWC, I thought I'd look into the new world of used car buying during ( and post) lockout. The amount of money in this business may astound you. There are something like 34 million cars on our roads, I think

There is Cazoo, of course: https://www.cazoo.co.uk/about-us/

Then webuyanycar: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Buy_Any_Car, owned by BCA ( used to be British Car Auctions)  as is Cinch https://www.cinch.co.uk/

In November 2019, private equity group TDR Capital completed the purchase of webuyanycar.com’s parent company, BCA for a reported £1.9bn.

In September 2020, the company reached a significant milestone and bought its 2 millionth vehicle[4], just less than 4 years after celebrating 1 million purchases.

Then there is family owned and run Availablecar/ Fords of Winsford car supermarkets with a turnover of some £400 million

Then there is CarGiant https://www.cargiant.co.uk/ owned by billionaire Geoffrey Warren. They price for fast turnover - a mate in Aldershot has just bought  from them recently at a very good price indeed.

Is the local dealer on the way out?

The only thing the smaller dealers these days is their reputation. Some only sell good cars and rely on that reputation to keep going. But these big firms, you take what you get and often do their damnedest to live up to the stereotype of used car salesmen.

I’d be unhappy about getting a car from one of those big places...

Buy one , keep it till it falls apart , I bought my wife a 9 month old BMW 325 convertible 18 years ago for her birthday , she's still got it , I had a 99 plate Disco for 12 years until not much was left working on it and I didn't really need a 7 seater anymore
