It's all about opinions. If he had have kicked it we wouldn't probably be discussing it. But I can see your point of view as well.

A previous kick that had to go 30 yards didn't have the legs, then we go for one at 45 yards with the same kicker.

We had Saints on the rack, that's why we got the penalty. Wigan should have gone for more pressure rather than a kick and hope victory.

They had bided their time all game and then had a rush of blood to the head thinking if we can just get this over!!!

I disagree, at the time I said it was risky and would give Saints the ball. Hardaker isn't the greatest of kickers and his percentage isn't up in the top bracket.

Don't know who made the call but it was the wrong one.

Had it gone dead, they'd have got the ball back.

It was never going to go dead, having watched Hardakers kicking over the last couple of seasons I was confident it wouldn't make dead.

Believe me, I was convinced it wouldn't make it.

Fair enough, you have seen him kicking more than me. When he joined us as a teenager he didn't get a chance as Liam Finn was an excellent kicker.

This is a problem Wigan have, we have a second best kicker having to be the first best kicker, we don't have a really top class guy on the boot.

Oh for a Frano Botica!

Botica wasn't a kicker when he came to Wigan, he realised Wigan didn't have a recognised kicker but he was capable. He decided the best way to crack the first team was to become a kicking specialist. He spent hours practicing until he became an invaluable addition to the team because he could make those small differences.

Fair play to him, he was one of the best goal kickers I have ever seen. I can't remember the bloke he had as a goal kicking Coach.

Brilliant game.  Congrats to both teams.  Plenty of talking points.  I had to turn over to another channel after the final try - problem having a wife not interested in the game, and other things on TV.

I note the final score is 8-4.  Did Saints miss the conversion?  The try was scored under the sticks.

I showed that game in Denmark to an audience who were humouring me.

They ended up being caught up in it.

How did those men come out in hte second half to carry on?

It was a great advert for the sport when it needed it.

I guess they just refused the kick as they are allowed to. It wasn’t needed after all.

Glad they did, i had Saints by 1-5! Kerching! Quality game!

I don't understand the flack for going for 2 at the end. I'd have made the same call.

It's easy in hindsight to say it was the wrong call, but they could have set up for a drop goal and knocked on in the build up to it. People would then be saying that should have gone for 2.

They were just unlucky.

Taking the kick for touch and setting up to try for a field goal in the middle of the count  would at least have prevented Saints from having enough time to respond if the attempt had failed. Hardaker in taking the penalty had to kick the ball dead if he missed and his previous attempt for the conversion that failed to clear the bar did not inspire confidence.

French appeared to be completely unaware of the danger of the situation when the ball bounced in the in goal area in the final seconds and just failed to react quickly enough.

I tipped the Saints by 1-6 incidentally!

Finally I wonder where the  game would rank in a list of the best Grand Finals.

Very tight, totally watchable, intriguing & enthralling.

People will go on about the level or quality but RL is simply always at its best when it's close.

Is that game the longest a team has been prevented from scoring a try in a match? 80:08?

Drama, intrigue and suspense.

A roller coaster white knuckle ride.

The greatest game renews its subscription.

Congratulations  to St Helens but this was so cruel for Wigan. In a wonderful game so close, so tight and so brutal it's typical just a few incidents proved so critical.

1. Smithies daft rash shoulder charge giving Saints the lead on half time, stupid 🤪

2. Hardaker unluckily hitting the crossbar.

3. Appallingly poor decision pretending Hastings head shot Fage.

4. Hardaker so close with the late penalty kick.

5. The luck of the bounce putting Jack Welsby in dreamland.

Magical entertainment 👍🙂🏉

I understand why they went for it, but I have made my thoughts known for a long time about the increase in taking the 2 and how it is a negative aspect of our game, and last night was quite a good example of it.

I think your summary is spot on, Wigan had done the hard work, been patient and in reality had done enough to earn a win there. They should have turned the screw, and Saints were there for the taking.

To miss was one thing, it was a difficult kick, but to not get it dead was the killer. It let Saints off the hook and gave them the sniff.
