Vikings raise £10,000 for Rob Burrow & MND with charity bike ride
Goole Vikings had planned as a club to Ride the 38 miles from The VPG in Goole to Headingley in Leeds, home of Rob Burrow’s former team-Leeds Rhinos. The cycle was due to raise funds in aid of former Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow who was tragically diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in December 2019. Sadly, due to the recent national lockdown this was made impossible and any effort to raise money as a club was curtailed. Covid-19 did not dampen the players spirits however as approximately 25 of the squad individually cycled local routes equating to the required 38 miles from Goole to Headingley stadium.
Over the space of 2 weeks each player/staff member carried out their individual route and the final grand total raised due to these efforts was £10,000. Despite not being able to ride together as a club, a real team effort ensured that maximum funds were raised for a more than worthy cause.
All at Goole Vikings ARLFC would like to thank each and every person and business who donated to the fund. The response from the local community when asked to sponsor the players/staff in such troubling times has been nothing short of fantastic. The Rugby League community is famed for its ability to come together in times of adversity, all at the club are however extremely delighted to see people from outside the Rugby League demographic contributing to such a fantastic cause. Thank you all.
Fundraising for Rob Burrow and MNDA has been at the forefront of Goole Vikings agenda throughout 2020, the clubs planned charity fundraising game vs Ackworth Jaguars in late March had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Plans are afoot to re-schedule the game which will likely take place mid 2021.
The club have also released a special Rob Burrow training top, this has been made available for purchase at a price of £20 with all proceeds being donated to MNDA. The shirt is sponsored by local business Cassledens Funeral services of Goole with the funding provided being donated to MNDA by the club. For more information on how to purchase the shirt please contact the clubs Facebook page directly or message 07557400990.
