I have yet to read anything about it coming to fruition. There was an old black and white film where the nasty rich man wants to be seen as a philanthropist (to get into high society, good newspaper coverage etc), so hires a publicity expert to help him. He starts by giving amounts of money to charity anonymously. After several months it is 'leaked' that it is him giving the charitable donations and it makes all the papers, and he becomes the toast of the town. He then gradually stops giving to charity, but because he did it anonymously before, everyone thinks he is still doing it, but doesn't shout about it.
