Rob Burrow MBE

Recommended Posts

Rob Burrow, what a brave, courageous man. Its been lovely to see him with his family recently on TV. His battle with MND is so brave, he sets everyone such a fantastic example. His positive approach is inspiring. The support from his family, friends and the rugby league community has been lovely to see. Especially Kevin Sinfield, so proud of him as a fellow Oldhamer. The rest of the rugby league community have also rallied for him which is what rugby league does. His MBE is richly deserved as he fights this disease and to promote awareness of the condition.

Lord Sinfield?

Ha ha, I don't think Sir Kev's Yorkshire knighthood can be upgraded by the Queen.

In any case, to get a peerage you need to raise £2.5m for a political party, not a charity.

What he's done in raising awareness as well as so much money seems to fit the criteria for an upgrade to OBE.

Shame. ‘Lord Sinfield of Headingley’ has a nice ring.

Losing a libel case , along with your Yarpie drinking buddy to the current Pakistani Prime Minister is also a criteria to enter the upper house.  😉

One of the reasons I do not like these awards is the way different grades are given out.  We are being told Burrow is awarded a MBE.  Doddie Wier has an OBE.   This is not the 'fault' of Wier, he is clearly a decent brave man. Both awards will be well deserved by their families.

But here we are taking about different awards for the same tragedy. Luvvies at OBEs, more mortals MBEs.  Thankfully Burrow is remembered properly.

When you get time, have a read of this expose that spill the beans on what really goes on behind the scenes.

Overview

The honours system recognises people who have:

  • made achievements in public life
  • committed themselves to serving and helping Britain

They’ll usually have made life better for other people or be outstanding at what they do.

They must still be actively involved in what you’re nominating them for. The only honours which can be awarded after someone’s death are gallantry awards.

Whether someone gets an honour - and the honour they get - is decided by an honours committee. The committee’s recommendations go to the Prime Minister and then to the Queen, who awards the honour.

Nominating someone for an honour

Anyone can nominate someone for an honour.

How you apply depends on whether you want to:

After you nominate someone for an honour

You’ll get an acknowledgment - but you may not hear anything else for 12 to 18 months.

All nominees will be checked by various government departments to make sure they’re suitable for an honour. This may include checks by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

The honours committee reviews those nominations that are sent to it.

What people get honours for

People get honours for achievements like:

  • making a difference to their community or field of work
  • enhancing Britain’s reputation
  • long-term voluntary service
  • innovation and entrepreneurship
  • changing things, with an emphasis on achievement
  • improving life for people less able to help themselves
  • displaying moral courage

Honours are given to people involved in fields including:

  • community, voluntary and local services
  • arts and media
  • health
  • sport
  • education
  • science and technology
  • business and the economy
  • civil or political service

Group nominations

You can only nominate individuals for honours.

You can nominate a volunteer group for the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

Great for Rob and others rewarded for their genuine good deeds, charity work etc, but getting awards just for playing sport is ridiculous. Lewis Hamilton knighted? Just got doing his job? Load of nonsense

Why single out Hamilton? A lot of sportspeople have honours for a lot less than he has achieved.

I would tend to leave knighthoods to the end of their careers but it's hard to say he doesn't deserve one given his unparalleled success.

I think we should leave to one side our thoughts and opinions on the honour system on this thread (any other business) and congratulate Rob Burrow on a well deserved honour.
