Loveable Rogues

Recommended Posts

Looking back upon memorable highly charged encounters one of the most rousing recollections was the traditional 'off the ball scuffle'.

Call em The Usual Suspects or perhaps The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, there always seemed to be larger than life characters blessed in the art of thumping.

Who would be your top 3 specialists guaranteed to whip the crowd into a frenzy?

I always had an entertaining day out when any of my personal choices were getting wound up, take a bow gentlemen:

Paul Cullen {Wire)

Tony Cottrell ((Leigh)

Charlie Birdsall (Hull, Carlisle & Hornets)

I'm sure they're all jolly nice people really.

🤪🥊😄

One the games etched in my memory is the Warrington vs. Wigan game from Wilderspool on New Years day in 1988.

Among many moments of madness was Andy Goodway taking Cullen out high and late. Then when Goodway was sent off he stood on a prone Cullen on the way off the pitch and Cullen got up and charged after him and all hell broke loose.  This played out right in front of me and I have never seen a player so mad than Cullen at that point.

If anyone hasn't seen it, the incident is in this video from 1 minute 10 seconds.

There`s been a few, but I can`t go past Rod `the Rocket` Reddy, short and long passing game, could mix it with the best, great off-load in traffic, just a natural footy player. And dirty as. I loved it.

Niel Cowie always seemed to be in middle of a few bits a biff.Chico Jckson were one to keep an eye on if trouble were brewing. and always loved to see Brendan Tuuta in a bad mood on pitch. special mentions to our own Mark Scott.

Timmy Street. End of thread.

Yeah, he was horrible.

Brad Hepi used to really wind the opposition up, including me when he was at Carlisle. Obviously it was totally undeserved once he moved to Town....

I remember Graham Middleton breaking Brad Hepi's jaw with one punch up at Workington. Middleton was on the ground underneath Hepi after a high shot from Hepi.

To this day I don't know how Middleton did it, it was akin to Bruce Lee's 1 inch punch. Nobody seemed to mess with Middleton more than once. lol.

Years ago, I was lucky enough to get a work experience placement from school at Huddersfield RLFC (pre giants), and I got to know a few of the players:- Brad Davies, Jason Lawrence, Laurent Luchese and few of the other lads really well. I carried on training with them after my work experience was over for a couple of seasons whilst I was at college, and they always said the guy they feared more than anyone was Michael Booth, Batley's standoff at that time. Until then, I rather naively thought RL players feared no-one.

Thing was, as a Batley fan watching him every week, I wouldn't have picked him as a dirty player, not even in the top 3 dirtiest players in the team, at that time. He never seemed to get in to the mucky stuff, but after what they'd said, it was amazing how many opposing players could be seen in a heap after a Boothy "tackle".

There was a period towards the end of the 90’s/early 00’s where the game had Sonny Nickle, Mick Cassidy, Barrie McDermott, Neil Cowie, Vila Matautia, Jamie Peacock, Stuart Fielden, Dean Sampson etc (I’ve probably missed a number of names). There was a huge list of absolute animals around that period that weren’t backwards in coming forwards.

Many look back fondly and reminisce about Rocky Turner's antics.  He was a bit of a lad.

This world was never meant for one as beautiful as me.

Goodway must have had smelling salts on his boots because Cullen’s recovery was remarkable!
