Ray Warren shelves retirement plans

Recommended Posts

Channel 9 must e crippled by sentimentality. Ray Warren passed his use by date several years ago. He cannot identify players any more, let alone pronounce many of their names if they are Polynesian or especially if they are Melanesian. He should be released and put out to pasture in the country town of Junee, where a statue of his unlikeness now stands.

Still has the ability to make the dullest game sound exciting, glad he’s going around again.

Yes he's still by far the person whose voice you want to hear calling the big games. I just wish Sky took the Channel 9 rather than the Fox feed for regular season games.

Still one of the best around. He actually called Game 3 State of Origin from his house in Sydney, while the rest of the commentary crew were at the match in Brisbane (something to do with covid travel restrictions). Watching the game on TV, you would not have known until they mentioned it.

So for anyone trying to paint him as some senile old fool, please read that article.

After Ray Warren, there are only two decent commentators IMO, Andrew Voss and Warren Smith.

Please tell me you mean Warren Smith and not Warren Ryan!

I really enjoyed Dan Ginane in the few games he did last year.

Warren has one thing you can't learn - a wonderful voice. He's just lovely to listen to. He's certainly still the best person we get on the Ch9 feeds. Gould is now just bitter and Joey is awful.

Vossy is at his best when he's just calling the game and doesn't get too involved in the extra stuff (there are times and places to hear about Patty Butties).

Listening to Warren and Gould during the Grand Final was painful. One slow to recognise what was happening, the other too biased to admit his team wasn't good enough to win.

As a play-by-play caller, calling the game is the only thing Voss should be doing and when play is underway his is the only voice which should be heard.  The sidekick(s) should only be heard during breaks in play.

Dan Ginane for me

Remember watching this at the time and Ginnane called this moment perfectly! NRL have some great callers and he's one of them. Agree with others that Ray Warren and Vossy are the other two stand outs.

For you to call Joey “awful” is very disrespectful of a rugby league icon, and flat wrong. The rugby league Immortal Andrew Johns is not a game caller. He is an amazingly insightful analyst of the technical aspects of the game. He has suffered and dealt with severe mental health problems over the years. He deserves respect and admiration for that. Andrew Johns brings a commentary skill that few others possess.  Certainly not his purported rival for the status of the greatest half back ever, Jonathan Thurston. (Joey was a powerful defender, Thurston never). Thurston in retirement was tried as a commentator, but rightly discarded for any major role. He offers little more than a disconcerting nervous cackle, certainly not brilliant analysis. Andrew Johns is a special talent in commentary, just as he was as a player on the field. Please don’t let me see you disrespecting Andrew Johns on this forum again.

I think there should be a standing rule with Rugby League commentators.  When they spend more time reminiscing about where the players on the pitch were born and first played rugby than the do describing the game they are watching... it is time to call it a day.

He gets very touchy about people saying it looks nothing like him.

I mean, it looks like a jacket he might own...

Many people on here have touted Andrew Voss and Dan Ginnane as good game callers. Ginnane I agree. Voss however is overrated, in my opinion. He knows not the concept of modulation of excitement level. Voss continually yells at a hundred miles an hour. Ray Warren, for all his geriatric defects, still has that excitement modulation skill which has made him great. Voss gets all the praise that he does in the UK because of his interest in and knowledge of the international game (which I agree is admirable), and because of his knowledge of and promotion of Super League, and also his promotion of Pakistani curry shops in Bradford and other northern towns. The latter is not relevant to his skills as a game caller.

One game caller who is very good is Ray Hadley. However many dislike Hadley because of his frequently nasty personality, the most dreadful example of which relevant to rugby league was his successful 2GB radio public campaign, and Channel  9 backroom campaign, to get his rival caller Andrew Voss fired at Channel 9. The ostensible reason was Voss’s statement that the statue in Junee didn’t look much like Ray Warren. For this legitimate expression of aesthetic opinion, Hadley went on a months long tirade against Voss, ridiculously accusing Voss of being disrespectful of a great man. Most intelligent people understood that what Hadley was doing was trying to get rid of a rival for successor to Ray Warren’s mantle. Unfortunately the powerful and ruthless Hadley, who has huge ratings as a 2GB talk back radio jock, and thus had the ear of the then top honcho in decision making at Channel 9, was successful in terminating Vossy’s career at Channel 9.

I like the way you manage to tell someone off for disrespecting Andrew Johns while simultaneously disrespecting Jonathan Thurston. It has a nice roundness to it

Good on Rabs for carrying on , why should he pack if he wants to carry on , is wanted by his employer and can still  do the job . And the fact he did the origin in Brisbane from his house in Sydney shows his eyesight is still spot on
