London Broncos Head Coach Danny Ward had plenty of praise for his First Team squad after completing week 4 of Pre-Season at a very cold Rosslyn Park facility.

Speaking to Broncos Media on Friday Ward was in good spirits having seen his players raise the intensity of training to another level despite the restrictions they are currently facing. He told us “It’s been great to have everyone out on the field together, it’s like being back in the School playground when everyone is buzzing to see each other after the holidays, but at the same time the intensity has really gone up.”

“It also been really pleasing to see the newcomers, ‘Hank’ (Chris Hankinson), ‘Chambo’ (Ed Chamberlain), ‘Nav’ (Romain Navarette) and Abbas (Miski) all fitting in without any problems.”

Whilst much of the Country has seen freezing temperatures and snow there has been no effect on the quality of training and Ward was pleased to have not had further delays to his plans.

He said “It’s obviously been cold and snowy but the beauty of Rosslyn Park is that we have been able to crack on and complete every session with the 3g pitch.”

“The Covid guidelines have made it a new experience and everyone is buying in to make the environment as safe as possible. Little things such no access to changing rooms or showers, so lads are getting changed in the stand, prehab sessions outside on the field and team meetings via zoom have made it a different program to the one we are used to, but there’s been no complaints, except maybe from some of the older staff complaining about the cold!”

This week saw the Broncos drawn at Home to Keighley Cougars in the Betfred Challenge Cup, and despite the West Yorkshire side being a division below, Ward was quick to put to bed any thoughts of an easy game. Ward said “If you look at the players Keighley have signed you will realise they will be one of the better teams in League 1 this year and have some great quality there such as QLT, Jake Webster and Scott Murrell with plenty of SL experience.”

“They are also coached by a former Bronco in Rhys Lovegrove so it will be a good test for us and like all coaches I am glad to have the Home game in this great competition but we will not be taking anyone for granted.”

The subject of where ‘Home’ is going to be has been a focus of many supporters on social media since the draw and Ward said he was pleased with the arrangements the club have in place for the Challenge Cup and Championship fixtures this year.

He said “Everyone is aware of Wimbledon and that will be, in time, fantastic for the future of the club but there are procedures to go through and we have to respect that.”

“Until that is sorted I am really happy with the venue we have sorted for playing our games, it is exactly what we need for these difficult times where we will not have the Broncos faithful behind us.”

“It’s out of our hands, we are just fully focused on the rugby and the things we can control, just give us a patch of grass and some goal posts and the boys will be ready to go.”
