Eddie
Do any of you know much about this team? I’m guessing they’re ambitious if they’re having a link up with Pacifique Treize, but do any of you know who’s behind them, what their ambitions are and whether it’s likely to happen? It would be great to see another strong side come through in France, but not sure if I should be excited about this team or not! I can see there’s also the Montpellier Red Devils who’ve been around since the 50s, while the Sharks are only two years old. But my French is woeful so I can’t understand most of it. Eddie any city with a population of nearly half a million and pretty rapid population growth is a good place for a Rugby League team for me. That`s got to be a good starting point. Yakstorm
Julien Lasserre is the chairman of the Sharks, and yes they have been pretty ambitious since the get go. The club is already in a French National Division, so same level as the Montpellier Diables Rouges, and has already applied to join the Elite II. Isn’t there P&R between the National and Elite 2 then - ie they apply to go up rather than doing it by winning N1?
Yakstorm
As far as I'm aware (and happy for someone who is more involved in French RL to correct me) there isn't any automatic P&R between any of the French competitions. The FFRXIII removed the automatic up and down for two reasons: Keep strategically important clubs, that could afford to stay in a particular tier, in that tier (ie. Toulouse in Elite 1) Not force clubs from small villages up to levels they couldn't afford, or didn't want to compete in (ie. Elite 2 club Baho with their population of 3,200) Whilst not perfect, at least it means if Montpellier do get accepted into Elite Two, they can focus on building their club rather than worrying about relegation.
