Catalans Dragons - Toulouse Olympique

Recommended Posts

Steve McNamara said in the build-up to the pre-season game recently at Aime Giral against TO that their opponents are now a Super League group in the making. They were to go on to lead the 2020 Championship months later before the comp was curtailed. 2021 will see them pushing the boat out like never before. The signing of two players from St Helens who had played in the previous two Grand Finals said it all. TO are now a bona fide entity like never before. Houles has assembled a pack of forwards he hopes to do the job with a front row of ex-Leeds GF winner Garbutt and the iconic Dragons prop Casty.

Four experienced prop forwards departed in one fell swoop from the Catalans in 2020. Bousquet now will at last at 29 yrs a starting place to cherish. The starting back three of the pack all in their twenties including new skipper Garcia. Dragons lacking dexterity and mobility up front needed fresherning up i think. Will the likes of Goudemand find a permanent place too in 2021.

At Gilbert Brutus distinct changes this year centred around their young reserve set-up. Two former Dragons players the Australians - Justin Murphy and Greg Bird have taken over the coaching with a change of direction. Last year four apprentices were attached to the Super League group after a season playing in the Elite 1 side. They trained alongside the professional team without playing a game, This year the quartet are included in the playing group and featured already in the two pre-season games.

It was exciting seeing so many of them on show. This has never happened before. For the games against the Elite 1 Selection and Toulouse Olympique around thirty players were involved even if it was just ten minutes at the end of each game for some. Made to feel part of something bigger too. Hopefully it will be built on. Utility back Mourgue and forward Joe Chan both have played for the reserve team this year but neither played against St Gaudens Sunday. The former has half a dozen or so runs out already with the Dragons but this could be his break-in-year. The teenager Chan maybe not far off getting a run-out soon too – would be a first for a son of a former player here - dad Alec was in the Wembley side in 2007.

*How sports teams are seen in cities like Toronto and Toulouse here....

Looks like being Toulouse's year, Covid permitting. If only there was a way to ensure they remain in Super League in the medium term...

There is, they just have to avoid being the worst of the 12 teams.

I’m sure they’d be able to target the likes of Leigh, Hull kr and Wakefield if they sign 2-3 top quality NRL players.

plus there’s also the possibility of super league expanding to 14 teams in 2023.

Yes, I'd like to see London and Toulouse in a rebooted Super League with terrestrial coverage etc.

If your prediction is correct, all they have to do is not finish bottom. Simples.

Is expansion to 14 teams just something you’d like to see, or have you heard it might happen in 2023? I’d love it to happen personally, and eventually 16, 12 team leagues are dull.

Good to see Arthur Mourgue there .Joe Chan and Matthieu Laguerre included in the group for the first time at Headingley Saturday. Bernard Guasch has said around ten young players could feature in 2021. In the backs Robin Brochon, Romain Franco, Louis Carre, Maxime Jobe and in the forwards Corentin Le Cam and Mathieu Cozza may get a look in. Too early for Cesar Rouge?

There was. The game took place a couple of weeks back

🤣🤣🤣 ...it had been a “long” day, ahem...

Looking forward to the mighty Hull Kingston Rovers beating Les Cats tomorrow!

Apparently this site says I "won the day" here on 23rd Jan, 19th Jan, 9th Jan also 13th December, whatever any of that means. Anyway, 4 times in a few weeks? The forum must be going to the dogs - you people need to seriously up your game. Where's Dutoni when you need him?

We're in lockdown but not really a bad lockdown. Go where you like until 7pm within 10km's of your home. 30kms with a piece of paper. Non essential shops closed. No meeting up with people. Kids home schooling next week then two weeks Easter holidays then back to school. Restaurant terraces to open early may etc. So a quick reboot before opening up for summer by the sound of things. No sports for the kids or adults ,so no fun for me coaching for at least a month.  Update there's a chance that youth team sports training ça continue

Is the former London Broncos player Guy Armitage a half back? TO Elite 1 half Romain Pallares also included in the group. Will Tony Gigot, Louis Jouffret and Lucas Albert come into the picture.

Armitage plays centre or wing. If they don't go with Pallares then you'd have thought Marion could fill in as half back, it's noteworthy there are three hookers in the squad.

Don't know if they'd have to wait until Elite 1 is finished but Jouffret would be an ideal replacement for Reynolds either way, he was going really well for Fev last year.

Guy Armitage is a winger/centre. Lucas Albert would be a good shout, but I'm sure I read somewhere that Toulouse and Catalan had an agreement with Elite One clubs that they wouldn't approach or buy players from Elite clubs during the season. Can anyone in the know confirm?
