New North American Competition?

If the NARL gets to a stage where it can afford to give foreign players a "one last pay day" it's a huge success.

Yeh I'd be quite happy with a mixed bag of foreign stars even those past their prime, ambitious local RL or RU players, gridiron converts and athletes from other sports keen on seeing what they can do... If the teams are evenly matched and filled with the above it should be very entertaining and attract the crowds. Purists may knock it but I say bring it on!!!

If you’re going to set up a new competition in a sport, surely you’d contact the governing body of said sport to see what was required, whether you think they’re competent or not? It just adds fuel to the fire of the scepticism of all of this.

Not in North American pro sports, things don't work that way here.  For example when the AFL, ABA and WHA all started their founders didn't bother asking for anyone's permission, they just went ahead on their own and set up their new leagues.

The plain fact in this case is that both the USARL and CRL are poor, weak organizations so realistically they only have two options: get behind the new league or get out of its way.  If the reports that the money is coming from what Ricky Wilby and his soccer player agent partner had assembled for their bid to enter the RFL structure are correct, then it might not last long.  Time will tell one way or another.

This would have to be the boldest prediction of all time.

You've basically said: I predict they will either succeed or fail.

My dear chap, its not a prediction, its a simple statement of all the possibilities.

If you want a prediction from me, I'll predict that the game continues to grow in North America.

How long it takes to overtake Super League depends on two things:

1. How fast they grow.

2. Whether Rugby League in this country continues to grow and in particular whether Super League can increase the amount of money coming into the game.

My point, in the previous post is that (as always) it's up to us.

Whether we stay in front (as a Tier One Nation) or fall behind, like England Soccer has done, is our responsibility.

My only other comment is that the rest of the world, won't wait for us, nor ask our permission to grow.

Considering recent history, I'll restate my point of view, that it's a good job, Elstone chose to resign.

Short skirts a consolation?

Or, you could always start following NARL which will be very exciting, i'm sure.

Not NARL, but I understand a new club is joining the California RL this year, the San Diego Barracudas.

I'm unaware of any connection with (or inspiration from) the strange days of Arena 84.

There certainly is plenty going on in North America at present.

Thanks for posting the Austin Rugby podcast. They seem excited and supportive. Shows in the big USA there isn't much animosity over what type of rugby it is. They just are passionate for rugby and want it to thrive.

This is me paraphrasing the host.

"And when we get some players and coaches, We will have them on too. Mix it up a little. It's Austin Rugby podcast. Dont really care what code it is."

They must be trying to expand in the NA market as they also do the kits for the Canadian Premier League. Neither are huge properties for them but a good way to get a start.

I was trying to work out how many clubs there are in North America.

14 in the NARL (I understand I'm jumping the gun here).

7 in California RL.

7 USARL teams not on the NARL.

Chicago Stockyarders and Joilet RL.

Queen City Royals (yet to play).

Utah (Avalanche?) are about to play California.

22 in the Jamaican system.

6 (+1) in Nicaragua.

The only one I'm absolutely clueless on is Canada.

So there's well over 50 already.

I can't believe there is talk on here on this league over taking Superleague! Nothing wrong with being ambitious but come on guys let's get this off the ground first!

Is there an example anywhere in the world of a sport going from zero to a hundred overnight? I just cannot understand why so many fans in RL seem to think we are going to suddenly be the magical exception to an age-old "rule".

Major League Rugby has gone pretty well for 2 seasons then a cancelled season in 2020. They have as many teams as Super League already.

It didn't start at zero and I don't believe it's at 100 now. But I could see NARL replicating it. MLR is really difficult to watch.

I think there's around 8-10 Canadian clubs, excluding Aces and Wolfpack, so pushes it up towards 60.

A fair number of these haven't played a game yet of course, plus we don't know how many will fall after Covid, but lots of people over there are coming out with plans and organising tournaments so it's going to continue to grow. Big unknowns are by how much and how fast.

I find the comments on the IRL wanting the RLWC2029 to be in the USA interesting, I think it is possible they have been talking to the NARL investors (although I recognise the USARL are the formal route) and this may have influenced the decision to fund and launch their competition. An existing comp with experience, teams and structures in place would be in an ideal position to immediatley benefit financially from a WC there. American investors are good at planning ahead. Those IRL comments coming out at this time are one hell of a coincidence if not.

For the US, I know of the following.  The ones with * have played at least one competitive game to date.

California:
  1. San Diego Barracudas (California RL)
  2. San Diego Swell (NARL)
  3. San Francisco Rush (NARL)
  4. San Francisco Savage (California RL) *
  5. Sacramento Young Tigers (California RL) *
  6. Los Angeles Mongrel (California RL) *
  7. Sacramento Immortals (California RL) *
  8. East Palo Alto Razorbacks (California RL) *
  9. North Bay Bandits (California RL) *
Oregon:
  1. Portland Loggers (NARL)
  2. West Valley Warriors (Oregon RL)
Texas:
  1. Austin Armadillos (NARL)
Arizona:
  1. Phoenix Venom (NARL)
Nevada:
  1. Las Vegas Blackjacks (NARL)
Delaware:
  1. Delaware Black Foxes (USARL) *
Pennsylvania:
  1. Philadelphia Fight (USARL) *
Virginia:
  1. Northern Virginia Eagles (USARL) *
New York:
  1. White Plains Wombats (USARL) *
  2. New York (NARL)
  3. Brooklyn Kings (NARL) *
Florida:
  1. Jacksonville Axemen (USARL, Masters, Women's) *
  2. Lakeland Renegades (USARL) *
  3. South Florida Speed (USARL, Women's)
  4. South West Florida Copperheads (USARL) *
  5. Tampa Mayhem (USARL, Women's) *
  6. Orlando Gators (Masters) *
Georgia:
  1. Atlanta Rhinos (USARL, NARL) *
South Carolina:
  1. Fort Jackson  Blackhawks (Wheelchair) *
  2. Columbia Kangaroos (Carolina RL) *
North Carolina:
  1. Fort Braggs Raptors (Wheelchair) *
  2. Charlotte Panteras  (Carolina RL) *
South Dakota:
  1. Sioux Falls (Wheelchair) *
Massachusetts:
  1. Boston 13s (NARL) *
Washington DC:
  1. Washington DC Calvary (NARL)
  2. DC Roosters (Nines) *
Ohio:
  1. Cleveland (NARL) *
  2. Columbus Voyagers (Mid-West RL) *
Illinois:
  1. Chicago Stockyarders (Mid-West RL) *
  2. Chicago North Shore (Women's)
  3. Joliet (Mid-West RL) *

Vermont:

  1. Queen City Royals (Unaffiliated)
Wisconsin:
  1. Milwaukee (Mid-West RL)

Alabama:

  1. Birmingham (Unaffiliated)
Non-State Specific:
  1. Roots Rugby (Nines, Women's) *
  2. Mid-Atlantic Reapers (Masters)

So there's 45 clubs (51 teams) on that list.  Naturally as we don't know what's happening in Utah, there maybe some clubs there, same Carolina did setup a number of other clubs outside of the Panteras and Kangaroos, however whilst I haven't found any evidence of them playing games, it doesn't mean they don't exist in some way, same with Texas.

Considering the USA Women's has announced that they'll also host tournaments in Salt Lake and LA this year (as well as Chicago and Tampa), I wouldn't be surprised if there are at least 2 more clubs/teams there.

Pretty sure all those ones made by the guy behind the Carolina's 9s never played a game. They're all black and white logos and he's fallen off the face of the earth.

At least the Panteras and Kangaroo clubs which they formed did take to the field.  He's some photos of the clubs in action.

Given the gloomy COVID forecasts for Canada it would seem that the resumption of rugby of either code is a long way away. We really need to speed up our vaccination program otherwise we look like we are going to be under restrictions for a very long time, and I’m not sure RL will be able to survive that.
