Perhaps there is an issue with the training and practicing regime at Leeds with so many injuries. Or maybe it's a Yotkshire diet/nutrition problem.

Or maybe it's just luck?

All teams go through it at some point.

Still very hard to judge after only a handful of games. Wigan haven't been convincing but it's also fair to say that struggling against Leigh isn't too surprising as it's a derby. A slow start against Wakey isn't surprising as we actually finished that game playing well whereas we've struggled against them in the past. Under Lam Wigan haven't exactly excelled against the perceived 'weaker' sides but have done okay overall.

So it's hard to say if Wigan so far are just Wigan doing what they always do under Lam or whether it's a stuttering start and we could get caught out against Leeds.

Both sides have injuries and mostly in the backs so that's an interesting dynamic. I'd say it probably favours Leeds because in previous games their pack has been incredibly dominant. If Wigan make errors and concede penalties like against York then Leeds could dominate territory. The concern for Leeds would be their Cup win last year was built on pack dominance and some intelligent game management from the halves.

I can see this game being Leeds dominating territory but maybe not taking their chances with Wigan struggling to make ground in contact but having some chances attacking from deep, similar to our home game against Leeds last season.

Wigan certainly need to not give away needless penalties. Down to focus.

It's early for all teams.  Cas started slow only beat KR ... eventually.  Saints started ok in Cup, then for large parts looked anonymous to me.

But, being a bit sarcastic, given the easy way to make yardage with the 10m line and 6 agains (and hairs breadth, labyrinthine, ruck rules), do teams need half backs anymore?  Does the game need the middle 50m of the pitch?

Well, yes indeed. I'm sure the highly trained and qualified staff at all clubs will be working to ensure its not technique or over-training in some way.

What's weird with Leeds' injury list is how its hit the backs really hard - notably full back, centre and halfback - whereas we're close to full strength in the forwards except for Holroyd and Tetevano.  That and the fact quite a few of the injured players haven't even played a game makes it odd.

As for sympathy? I'm not sure who's asking for any.  As an explanation for a poor performance/result it makes sense for Leeds, but also does for any other team.

Forwards win games, backs decide by how many. The problem is, even at full strength Leeds have a mid table pack. Take Tetevano out and it's a below average one.

As I said earlier in the thread, I was impressed with what Leeds were able to do against Saints in difficult circumstances, but I can see this next month being a struggle for them.

I disagree on the Pack I think when all fit Leeds have a top 4 pack

we would usually start with Oledski, Tetevano and Prior on the field, that IMO is up there and showed on Saturday they can get on top of the best in the League.

We are going ti have to do it tough for the next Month, especially with Tetevano getting banned but once we get something like our starting 13 out I think we’ll go ok

Tbf, you are right that the starters are pretty good. I do think you badly lack depth in the pack though. Especially at prop. It's a really big month in terms of keeping your season alive. I expect a Wigan win tonight. Then Hull KR, Huddersfield and Wakefield will all fancy their chances given your missing players. You have to win at least a couple of those because you then have Hull, Castleford, Saints and Catalans. The playoffs could easily be slipping away by then.

I agree with a lot of that

I'm actually fully expecting us not to be near challenging for the title this year, next year is our real push IMO

Theres rumours (and I believe they are just that) that we are targeting Taupau for next season, if we can keep hold of Prior (which I'm not too confident of) that would be one hell of a pack.

That would indeed be a very strong set of props.

I see this as another transitional year for Leeds. Don't forget that the year before last you were a side more concerned with avoiding relegation than winning anything. I feel like you probably overachieved a bit last year in what was a funny season in a lot of ways. Not taking away from your cup win though, the semi against Wigan was one of the best performances I've seen for a while.

I had you pegged for just narrowly missing the playoffs this season and couldn't understand why so many people were tipping you to do really well. For me there are still too many missing pieces in that squad, and I just can't believe that Richard Agar has suddenly become a top coach.

You will be up there challenging again soon enough though. Too good of a club not to.

We're not far off, I think we just lack a bit of pace in the halves, it will be interesting to see how Eastmond goes in that respect.

I wasn't convinced about Agar as a coach but to be honest he has done a fantastic job, its only just short of 2 years ago when he took over and we got dumped out of the Challenge Cup by Bradford and I haven't seen a Leeds team so devoid of confidence or spirit for a long time. Between Him and Sinfield they have done a great job and I thin Agar is often unfairly given too much stick, he is a very knowledgable coach. I don't see him staying on long term though as I reckon he will actually want to go back to doing the job he was brought into to do (player development) but the players seem to rate him very highly and obviously want to play for him.

After the horror few years we had its actually just a relief if we aren't trying to stay away from the bottom clubs

You seem to be whining about Leeds recently, don't know why Leeds are still a long way from being as good as Saints . A few years have passed

Soon we will be dancing the fandango

No more than Melbourne v Canterbury.
