Mikolai Oledzki stunned by England Call up

Recommended Posts

Well done to him on the call up. Personally I dont think he's quite international quality yet, but he seems to be improving all the time and being in this squad should help his development further. Interesting to see what the next couple of seasons bring for him.

I saw him playing at Redcliffe (in 2016) against the Aussie Schoolboys. He was one of the few England players to match the standard set by the opposition (which included Payne Haas).

Yes, he was one of the few from that tour that came away with credit after two big losses. I know he did OK in the first game and scored in the second (can't remember if he scored in the first).

As well as Haas, that Aussie team contained the likes of Zac Lomax, Nic Cotric and Campbell Graham so they were very good.

Big Brexit Waney’s “English born” thing didn’t last long.

I wish people would stop bringing this up, as this selection shows, he was clearly referring to Australians like Austin & Hastings, rather than players like Oledzki.

We shot our selves in the foot more than enough times to kill an herd of Rhinos in that game, I bet the young Australians thought it was Christmas.

I totally agree with that as an assessment, it doesn't stop it being a stupid comment though.

Exactly, it's a pretty desperate comparison. He is a product of the English RL system, end of story. Hastings, Coote, Austin are not.

What’s the difference?

It was a ridiculous comment that couldn’t really have come at a worse time generally, given the unrest and subsequent rise of the BLM movement, that dunce at Halifax making racist comments online and Jermaine Coleman saying racism wasn’t taken seriously in Rugby League. It’s lucky our sports profile is very small.

I believe I said at the time that it was incredibly poorly worded by Wane, but iirc it was in context of an interview asking about Australians playing for England at the time. I don't think you can link it to BLM at all though, he was never talking about the race of players.

At a time when race and xenophobia was in the news, it was staggering that he said what he did. Why he was never pushed on his thoughts by journalists, too, was disappointing. His comments remain dumb, at best. He’s gone on to pick Dan Sarginson, an Australian born player, too. The whole “anti Australian” thing, too, is rubbish.

if we are going down this route shouldn't he be used as a poster boy aimed at polish communities all over the uk to attract more raw polish talent in to the game? or is this another opportunity too good to take up?

He was talking specifically about Australian born players and its pretty obvious he was referring to players that are just playing for England out of convenience. As usual though people are twisting words to pick a fight.

Playing for Leeds/Saints/Wigan is 75% of the requirement for an England callup though, so its not really a surprise

Shock, horror, the most successful clubs with the best youth development systems have the most players picked for England.
