Kris Ratcliffe said errors were a big factor as Wigan Warriors were knocked out of the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup with a 30-24 loss at the hands of York City Knights on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking to wiganwarriors.com after the full time whistle, Ratcliffe said: “I thought it was a typical Cup tie, it swung one way and then the other, but we unfortunately just made too many individual errors and when we looked like we’d got ourselves in control, we’d make an error from kick off or make an error on the first tackle.

“York are a big set so we had to work on the ball, but they weren’t having to make as many tackles as they should have because were turning the ball over. That saved their energy a little bit and we never really managed to kick on with that bit of momentum.”

He added: “I think we knew what were going to be facing, we still didn’t really play smart to begin with and tried to go up the middle too much and that was playing straight into their hands. That suited their plan from the start, that was what they wanted and needed. After that, it was about us fighting back to get in and we did that, but we came up with errors and gave possession back to them.”

The Warriors now have a two-week break from playing before their next Betfred Women’s Super League outing against Huddersfield Giants.

On his intentions for the team over the next two weeks, Ratcliffe said: “There’s a lot of sore bodies after that, they’ve played against a big set and it’s arguably their first proper competitive game that we’ve had, so we need to work hard on some recovery across the board. There’s a few people who are going to need a bit of work to make sure they’re okay again in two weeks’ time but this time now is going to allow us to do that, recharge the batteries, get rid of any niggles and then we go again back on with the league.”
