Batley Bulldogs

If we must make football comparisons then Batley are probably closer to a National League North non-league club than anything. Part-time semi-pros etc. Helluva jump…

So why are are some people saying the RFL need to help Salford?

They are not saying that about Batley.

What’s this got to do with Salford?!

We see here the romantic self-deception about P&R in British rugby league, that it’s like football and dreams of glory can come true. Even though they don’t.

Batley are better off out of Super League and chasing futile dreams.

Batley must have some very decent players and have a decent coach in Craig Lingard, who had a long career playing for them, also possibly a fact that some people might not be aware of is that he has appeared as a contestant on countdown, so obviously he's intelligent as well.

I would think the situation Salford are in is more embarrassing than the very unlikely possibility of Batley gaining promotion.

Any time there's a thread about people's favourite away grounds, Batley always gets plenty of mentions.

Not from everyone.

Sure Dewsbury wanted to go up but were refused, happy to be corrected.

You are correct, and it could have been the death of the club had we been promoted.

The infrastructure of most part-time clubs is completely unsuitable for managing the requirements of a full-time SL club. Most Championship clubs rely heavily upon bands of volunteers doing great work to keep us running smoothly. The requirements of a SL club would mean that a number of new full-time staff would have to be recruited and employed, possibly on fixed-term contracts in anticipation of relegation. The players would have to seriously consider whether they wished to switch to full-time, possibly giving up well paid jobs in the process, only to have to revert to part-time before too long.  The requirements of Sky broadcasts cannot be met by most grounds, requiring significant investment. The licensing conditions of the local authority might well have to be revisited, and so on. There are a host of other requirements that go so much further than what has been won or lost on the pitch.

Without a detailed strategic plan the vast majority of the clubs below SL would be incapable of even one season in that division without the potential of causing themselves serious damage. Fortunately it is a dream that will probably never be achieved, to sighs of relief all round.

Sport, amongst other things, is a dream-world offering escape from harsh reality and the disturbing prospect of change.

No, because a name like Batley won't raise the profile of the sport beyond that of a regional niche market, like the SL big-name stallwarts have managed to do over the past 20-odd years.

Big name clubs lol ,SL was supposed to make us compete with the Aussies and we are still no better off.

I'm sure that wasn't the only reason. BUT, it was certainly sold to us with that as a primary reason. We got close in the early 90's. Then the aussies stepped on the gas and disappeared over the horizon.

It wasn't the only reason but it was one of the main reasons. Apart from the £££££ of course.

Give them chance, i'm not a Leigh fan but believe they've only been top flight 2 seasons in the last 26 of the Super League era? Can't see what more they can do from the 2nd tier compared to the absolute Giants of the sport flying the flag and banging the drum for the sport in SL for a quarter of a century.

Clubs like Wigan and St. Helens are usually amongst the front runners for honours, they are held aloft of shining examples of what a SL club should be by some, but are no more than small town clubs themselves.

How much have they, or indeed any of the current crop of SL clubs raised the profile of the sport?

As far as I can see, the profile of the sport has dwindled to almost complete insignificance. The new TV deal should serve as a strong indicator as to just how much the profile of the sport has diminished, largely down to the self-interest of certain fans and chairmen that either cannot, or do not understand the need for integrity in the sport.

A group that seemingly do not understand that their own significance, however big, or great, they think they are, is directly correlated to the size and overall health of the sport in which they compete.

The new (significantly reduced) TV deal has only given a stay of execution for those fortunate enough to be in SL for a further 2 years. How many of those clubs are self-sustainable enough to remain full time, should Sky decide they will pull the plug completely, or further reduce the next offer in two years’ time? Then what, a 6-8 team SL? When will the penny drop?

Realistically, if game keeps going down this insane path of keeping all of the funding at the top of the game, at the expense of every other club, there will be even less participation, fewer opportunities for players to play and develop to be the best they can be, and even less competition on the SL clubs to be the best they can be.

In essence, this approach has allowed all the SL clubs to become lazy over many years. They have funded themselves to the point, that no matter how badly run or organised they have been, they have ensured that they were safe in their comfort zones.

The teams below, could not realistically compete financially, because SL ensured they kept most of the funding for themselves and the teams below them at arm’s length and at a significant disadvantage to challenge them. The teams at the top of SL, have not had to worry, because they have known that more than half the clubs they are competing with, are so badly run, they have not had to do anything special to keep their status at the top of the game.

Stop the rot, before it is too late, if it is not already!
