Adrian Lam is expecting a ‘tough’ trip away to Leigh Centurions when the Warriors make the short journey to face their local rivals on Monday night.

The game will not only be the second time the two have faced off in 2021, but holds extra significance with the return of fans to stadia, albeit a restricted number.

Speaking to the media via Zoom in his weekly pre-match press conference on Thursday, the head coach explained how his side have dealt with last week’s defeat to Hull FC in the Betfred Challenge Cup ahead of Monday’s fixture.

“We had an honest, sharp conversation the next morning to make sure that we could move on. We are in a better place now, and all we can do is prepare for what’s next in Super League.”

Since narrowly beating Leigh in Round 1 back in late March, both clubs have had very different runs of form. Wigan remain unbeaten in the Betfred Super League, while John Duffy’s men have yet to register a point.

Despite this, Lam is not expecting an easy fixture. “They are a team who’ll be physical, aggressive and they’ll be up for it. It was tough in Round 1, going right down to the wire, so I can’t see why it won’t be any different on Monday night.”

He also explained how having spectators in the ground would influence the home side.

“There’s a lot of emotion connected to the game for Leigh, I presume, with fans back at their home ground. And for us there’s emotion of wanting to get back out there after that loss.”

26th-Match-21-Leigh-Centurions-v-Wigan-WJake Bibby scored two tries in Wigan’s win over Leigh in the opening round of the 2021 season.

On changes to his squad selection for the fixture, the head coach said: “There will be some minor changes, but we don’t have many players outside of the squad that we can choose from because if the injuries we have.

“Dom Manfredi will come into start, and then we will adjust the rest from there.”

He also provided an update on a number of players hoping to return from injury in the near future.

On Tommy Leuluai and Oliver Gildart: “Both players have a small chance this week, but a much bigger chance next week.”

On Liam Marshall: “He’s trained with the full squad for the first time today, they gave him a round of applause for getting back out there with them. He’s probably two weeks away.”
