Derek threatening to quit (again)

Is Derek Beaumont the grown up boy who cried wolf? In the paper today saying he'd considered walking away because of the initial decision about the academy, but where else would he be able to get him ego massaged than in RL?

Do you never consider things when life changing decisions go against you?

Derek saw the investment in the Academy as piece that allows the club to eventually become a realistic long term SL member. The benefits in everything by having a successful academy are huge from depth of squad, to salary cap benefits. Allowing the local kids an option to choose their local elite set up rather than being hoovered up by Wigan Saints and Wire was the last bit to long term SL sustainability.

Seems reasonable that the RL’s (original) decision about the academy would make him rethink pouring more millions of his hard earned pounds into the game. I wish there were more people like Beaumont involved in English RL.

Assuming it's related to this article? https://www.totalrl.com/beaumont-i-had-to-bounce-back-after-academy-blow/

Haven't read the print version, but from that page, I can't say I'd blame him, or people running the other clubs that were knocked back, from wondering 'why bother?'.

What other sports turn down investment in academies? He also made a good point about the salary cap provisions relating to academy players whilst not allowing all clubs an academy.

Generally, I wince when he opens his mouth, but have a bit more sympathy with him on this one.

Maybe Beaumont should have just threatened to take it to the impartial sporting arbitration panel. Not sure why he says the time isn't right as that approach worked perfectly for the other clubs.

Given it's a genuine rugby town, the question I have is why doesn't Leigh already have an Academy? And I don't mean recently, I mean yonks ago.

We did back have one under the old system of championship clubs running u20s squads with a proper league system in place. Several players went on to play pro including Joe Bullock and Chris Hankinson. The fact RFL made it optional and the introduction of dual registration basically killed off the system and Leigh eventually pulled out as there weren't enough games to justify having a team anymore. It's a shame as the u20s system worked great in catching those let go by SL clubs and giving them a second shot.

Leigh had one before but Beaumont closed it down to spend all the money on chasing promotion.

Why didn’t he do it years ago then

That comment is below you Damien, is that the real reason?

Which year was it then?

Do you not believe what the preceding post to yours explained, or is it just your attempt at humour!

Leigh did have an academy Dav, but in this Rugby League system of not upsetting the equilibrium of not allowing clubs to better themselves by political decisions controlled by the clubs themselves it is not to be.

In your opinion should Leigh be allowed an Academy, £400K was mentioned as the investment the club wanted to invest, it would enable the club to reap the benefits that those allowed to run an Academy are privvy to, but that will never do, will it.

In 2016 they ran with no academy and reserves to focus on promotion. As usual Beaumount seems to change his tune every season depending on which the wind is blowing.

And the answer to that was offered by LeytherRob previous to your post, I went along to some games which did not take place that season they were cancelled very late, it was no use carrying on with the academy in that format.

It's very difficult to run an academy with nobody to play games against
