When the NZRL came out saying they wanted assurances of player safety when obviously the organisers had already given them that, I had my suspicions that this was a precursor to a jointly organised decision to pull out. The will to make the effort wasn’t there from either NZ or Australia. There can still be an entertaining tournament for people to enjoy. If it can be held without negative financial implications then bring it on. When the NRL clubs say the NZRL jump, the NZRL say how high
Exiled Townie
Just seen this now ..... think I am in shock. Just starting to read through some of the posts here, and the depth of feeling that has gone into them shows what this comp means to so many of us. 7 Jam Eater 1.(noun. jam eeter) A Resident of Whitehaven or Workington. Offensive. It is now a term of abuse that both towns of West Cumbria use for each other especially at Workington/Whitehaven rugby league derby matches. Smudger06
The narrative is changing on twitter, you've now got everyone and his dog from independence crazy Scottish nationalists to covid fans who clearly want to get pinged for a week off, none of whom know anything about the power politics of NRL Clubland using this for their own ends.....oh dear.....

Gerrumonside ref
Must admit I always had Australian sportspeople down as down to earth fighters. If they’re not careful the NRL are going to become a shadowy reflection of the traits they’ve probably always hated about parts of the old country. Elitist, pompous, greedy etc Hopefully the players and our allies over there will try to avoid that.
thebrewxi
You know when we have those theoretical conversations on here about what if Trbojevic played for Serbia, what if Tadesco played for Italy, Moses still played for Lebanon, Cook Islands had first pick of eligible players, etc.......
Mumby Magic
Think this the perfect time national and internationally to get everyone to unify. We are on about an independent panel nationally the same should be done international wise. FearTheVee
The more I think about the more wonderful it would be for the competition to go ahead without them, for us to really get behind it like never before and make a success of it (prefereably, for me, with invitational Oz/NZ teams) and show how daft it was to pull out. It could still be a wonderful festival of RL and I would be really sad if it got cancelled. Hopefully the organisers can tap the Government up for some more support.
giasf
Visited the Sydney Morning Herald website to get a feel for what the Aussie press think. No mention on the homepage.
