Eddie Posted July 22, 2021 Share Posted July 22, 2021 I know obviously many teams get higher attendances than the football teams in their town (St Helens, Warrington, Cas, Widnes, Wakey etc etc), but people from there may also go to watch the larger football teams in their area. Are there any places in England where RL is genuinely more popular than football, ie where it’s talked about before football in workplaces, pubs and schools? Yeah I'd say so - my only doubt would be that Cas at least is quite a large town and whilst most support Tigers, they pretty much all support Leeds United as well. Where as in Hunslet in many quarters there's a complete disdain towards Leeds united and football in general, which makes me feel more comfortable saying there. I think in West Cumbria most pubs show RL, everyone talks about the game, especially the amateur games, and the Rugby clubs get better attendances then the local semi pro Football Workington Reds team. You probably see slightly more Man U and Liverpool tops on the streets than the local RL teams or even Leeds and Saints but not by much. Leeds United are the biggest sporting institution in the area, but in these 3 places it probably plays second fiddle, just, to RL as a whole. You'd honestly say RL is bigger in Wakey than Football, Tommy? That surprises me a bit - most the lads I went to school with from over that way couldn't careless for RL except when they played Rhinos maybe but no more than a casual interest. I suppose it depends on the area of Wakey in general most of the North, East and South of the city I'd say is "rugby" (either code) whereas the west definitely leans closer to football domination. Absolutely, as I said LUFC are the single biggest sporting institution, but RL as a whole - as in the sport in all its forms, has a lot of latent presence. Stirlin Posted July 22, 2021 Share Posted July 22, 2021 York RL have been on an amazing journey in the last few years with Jon Flatman and his crew in charge , now in the second tier of RL yet the footy team in the same period have plummeted to the sixth tier , the only team in National League North who are full time players. For years previous they ridiculed us in the local press but their bile is now directed at City. Our attendance has increased , theirs is pretty much the same , and above ours.
