Brisbane Broncos and North Queensland Cowboys are likely to have nothing more than pride at stake as they do battle here in this Queensland derby. The pair are struggling at the wrong end of the ladder and they each come into this on the back of some poor showings of late.

They both did show some character their respective losses to Penrith Panthers and Melbourne Storm last week.
There is little to split the two if they both perform like that again but the edge is just for the Broncos having won seven of their last nine matches against the Cowboys at Suncorp.

Games called off for rest of weekend?

The NRL is still trying to confirm its plans for the weekend, with discussions ongoing about potentially relocating matches.

Super Netball had a scheduled weekend off, but will be sweating on developments through the week to see if its season is impacted too.

The announcement of south-east Queensland's latest lockdown came on Saturday morning after six new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in the state.

All were the Delta variant, prompting the introduction of what Queensland officials called "the strictest lockdown" Queensland had seen during the pandemic.

"There will be no football matches," Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young said.

"So no community sport, no professional sport, nothing for the next three days. Starting as of 4:00pm today."

The news caught many off guard, including a VFL match between the Suns and Southport Sharks on the Gold Coast, which was brought to an abrupt end midway through the first quarter when the lockdown was announced.

Now the cancellation of the Saturday games is confirmed.

All of Saturday’s fixtures have been postponed but the NRL remains in crisis talks in a move to salvage the remaining Round 20 games after the Queensland Government announced the strictest lockdown in the state’s history.

Queensland’s decision to enter a snap three-day COVID lockdown immediately placed the remaining five Round 20 fixtures in jeopardy.

The NRL has confirmed that Saturday’s 3pm fixture between the Rabbitohs and Dragons, 5:30pm’s fixture between the Knights and Raiders and 7.30pm’s game between the Storm and Panthers have all been called off and will be rescheduled.

While the Chief Health Officer indicated that no NRL games would be played in Queensland for the weekend, the NRL has engaged the Government in emergency talks to explore other avenues.

5 minutes ago, unapologetic pedant said:

Have any State premiers set out how their zero infections policy will pan out?

Are they anticipating periodic lockdowns in perpetuity?

Yesterday the PM said that when we reach 80% fully jabbed the whole country will be opened up and there will be no more lockdowns. When we reach 70% there will be very few restrictions and lockdowns will be much more geograohically limited.  In the meantime I think the consensus is that NSW's response to this current outbreak was too half-hearted. The most successful strategy seems to be short intense lockdowns until contact tracing has tracked every case. I think this is why Qld has opted for 3 days.

I think we'll reach 80% double-jabbed adults within 4 months. Very few people agree with me, judging by the media I've seen.
