How are Wakefield & Cas stadiums millstones in this conversation - they own their stadiums and would earn 100% revenue from any games or events. Giants are joint owners of the John Smiths, so yeah, the Giants earn a significant chunk of matchday revenue. This is not a new development. paulwalker71 Posted August 5, 2021 Author Share Posted August 5, 2021 I think people are missing an important point here, namely that artificially creating 'reserve' teams does NOT equate to developing players for first teams. Take the Bulls as an example, we created a reserve squad for the 2020 (aborted) reserves league. Quite a few players were signed specifically to pad out the squad without there being any prospect of those guys ever being in the first team. What's the point Interestingly, as an aside, I checked on that squad list and 12 of those players were simply binned off when the Reserve league was scrapped. A couple of them ended up signing for other clubs, but most of them have simply disappeared - presumably either back to the amateur game, or lost to the game entirely. The point about a smaller-sided game is that you can keep a squad of 25-26 players and use the players who don't make the match day 17, bolstered by lads from the Academy where needed. Hudds still lose about 80% of income plus stadium management costs - they own 20% of the stadium. Obviously not as bad as Wigan who even had to move a game because a wedding was booked in the hospitality suite, and I believe Hull don't even earn "wet" matchday revenue. They will also have agreements that state they pay x amount per year; that won't be reduced just because you need the facility for fewer games. Giants make very little on their shabby crowds rattling around in that stadium. Mr Davy is the only thing keeping them afloat. It's highly likely that Giants will be looking for a new home in the not too distant future - they are just in the way at this stadium and barely cover operational costs.
