I’m beginning to think that Tom Johnstone is on a similar path as Stevie Ward.

It might be time for him to consider what’s best for himself in later life.

Don’t talk rubbish, he clearly hit the ground hard, I wouldn’t think many would have got up from that. Talk about making a drama out of nothing.

There’s no doubting he hit the ground hard, the point is it’s ANOTHER concussion for a player who’s just had a major issue recovering from the same injury.

How many do you want him to have before you start thinking of him and his health and not the tries he scores!

I don't want him to have any but it's part of the game, he may never have another.

If you are trying to eliminate head injuries from the game then the game is over and players know that, most are not stupid, they weigh up the risks. It's seems incredibly fashionable at the moment to over react to every risk as if life in any form can be risk free, it isn't! I'm all for reducing risk as much as is possible but there comes a point where it's an informed choice. It's also hugely arrogant of people to assume that players are exploited fools, they are not, they have a great life that they are reasonably well paid for, people need to get a grip and stop virtue signalling at every given opportunity.

It's his choice and I can assure you it's one Tom isn't in any hurry to take, he's just been unlucky.

Also there was more to do with Toms absence than the two head injuries received. There was another underlying issue, nothing to serious and that has now been resolved but it's not for me to say other than it wasn't a Rugby related issue. Players are human and they do get ill for other reasons.

I think it’s only fair to tell you that Tom is a friend of mine, I’ve known him since he was 14 years old.

I’m not suggesting that Tom announces his retirement tomorrow morning, I merely said that I fear he’s on a similar track to Stevie Ward. I hope to God not but I’d rather see him healthy than suffer problems throughout the rest of his life due to pressing on with his Rugby career. I think he’s one serious concussion away from considering this himself.

Im sorry if you think concern for someone I’ve known for over 10 years is ‘virtue signaling, whatever that actually is

Is the season over yet?

Is there going to be a Challenge Cup benefit for next season by finishing in the top 8?

This world was never meant for one as beautiful as me.

It's fair to tell you I also know Tom in a professional capacity, although not since he was 14, I must confess. Failing an HIA does not necessarily mean he had a concussion. In this case I don't believe he did, his withdrawal was a precaution, all things considered.

If Tom had a serious issue, ie one diagnosed by a specialist, I don't think either he or the club would persist, do you? That's my point, clubs no longer exploit and most players, certainly Tom, would not allow themselves to be put in serious danger.

As I say it's an informed choice and one I can't see him making any time soon.

Tom has been astonishingly unlucky with injuries that's true, but none are fundamentally down to his physical make-up. He's not especially prone to any specific type of injury, yes I know he had two ACL's but again just pure bad luck.

Rugby League is littered with players who's early career is blighted with injuries but who eventually overcome them to have a hugely successful later career without any long term issues.

However let's get one thing straight, RL is a dangerous sport, it's meant to be to some degree, that's where the excitement comes from, it's why fans pay good money. They don't pay £25 a game to watch touch and pass or a glorified version of 9's, let's be honest. That's what I meant by virtue signalling, it's like people are covering up their guilt by not accepting reality and demanding a risk free game that simply can't be achieved whilst still turning up to applaud big hits.

Every time anyone plays RL at any level they literally risk their lives. They risk far worse than head aches, look at Masoe, a nothing tackle but one that nearly crippled him for life. Yet oddly he could have done it wresting with his kids, you simply can't legislate risk from life and certainly not from RL. These lads have a dream life but not without risk, we have to accept that or the game is over.
