Grand final - will it be full?

Recommended Posts

I've booked my tickets.

Will it sell out/nearly sell out as usual?  Imagine if Catalan got a new name on the trophy in front of a great crowd and France vs England is competitive in decent French crowd it would be a good end to a difficult year

What do we think?

No it won't. My guess is around the 45-50k mark if Catalans get there. Will still be an amazing atmosphere though and Catalans (like at Newcastle) will have a lot of neutral support whoever they play I would imagine.

Add another 10k perhaps if it is not Catalans.

Again one of RL sticking points. Selling out a major event. We should make it a massive occasion. Sod second class bands pay for a headliner. Speculate to accumulate. Have qualifiers and have the final for RLs fastest player and commerate retiring players with a walk out. Plus more can be done

Saints vs warrington = sell out

Hull vs Hull KR very unlikely final but may come close to a sell out.

Any other than this no.

Wigan fans are unhappy of late

Catalan have Covid travel issues

Hull, dont think their fans would turn out in numbers against current top 4.

Hull KR, maybe sell 10k and be similar to the Saints Salford final.

Having a proper band playing who appeals to all age groups and is more mainstream would help.

Playing at half time like the super bowl with different pre game entertainment should be the format

I'll probably go, especially if Catalan's get there. I'd like to think there'd be a few who'd be tempted on that basis. Then again I was at Wembley when they won the cup and that wasn't anywhere near a sell out.

I was born to run a club like this. Number 1, I do not spook easily, and those who think I do, are wasting their time, with their surprise attacks.

You're missing the GF specialists...

The crowd at Magic suggests we may do OK for the big final. The survey from SLE a few weeks back asking why we haven't bought tickets yet suggested sales were very low (understandably).

I think we will get the 60k+ we usually do, maybe 10k off for Catalans.

The good thing about Old Trafford is that they can just keep the top tiers closed and you barely even notice unlike Wembley. You can make Old Trafford look good with 45k in.

I think the effect on the crowd of Catalans being in the final will be far less for the Grand Final at Old Trafford compared to a Challenge Cup final at Wembley. The Grand Final is much easier to get to and has replaced the Challenge Cup for many fans as the neutral event to go to regardless of finalists.

They will have to deposit a bond in future seasons if that’s the case

Failing to sell out would be very embarrassing for English Rugby League.

We have lost the World Cup FFS... So surely fans who were planning to go to some of those games could be easily diverted to the Grand Final.

The GF is usually an amazing day/night, no matter who is playing. I have never had a bad time there.  If we can't sell out the game's flagship event, we are in a really serious position.

It's a club event , primarily of interest to fans of the clubs involved

Aye. True.

It's also the only really large scale Rugby League in the North all year.

The World Cup games would have also been attended, overwhelmingly by club fans. That's the way Rugby League works.

It is a shame the year Catalans might actually make it that its going to be the most difficult year ever for their fans to attend.

I have seen them twice at Wembley and they had very few fans there, so even without Covid how many do you think they would bring to the GF?

Bought our 4 tickets in April but must admit had a good think about it before I did. Be interesting to see what the attendance will be this year but am sure it will be a great night as usual.

Attendance is sure to be affected by people's caution over the risk of virus infection.

With all due respect, I don’t think that will be a factor, or if it is I don’t think it would be noticeable. A low attendance would be down to fan apathy.

I didn’t go to the CC when Catalans won it in 2018 but I was in London that weekend and their fans alone made it a great occasion - when do you remember gangs of French RL fans wandering round London chanting ‘Cat-a-lan’?
If Catalan make it this year, work permitting I’d be very tempted to go.

We could pay too money and get Kings of Leon or The Killers and the fans would still moan.

But it was a great occasion and probably one of the best in recent years for atmosphere.  I've no interest in attending the GF though, regardless of the finalists.

This world was never meant for one as beautiful as me.
