Some bad news for French RL

Recommended Posts

Of the 19 refs left in France 2 come up from Valencia in  Spain,

A new idea by the federation of doubling the price to enter a u19s team into the league elite, 2 thousand euros instead of 1k, so the club's have to fork out for this plus some clubs pay the u19s playing licence which cost around 80/90 euros per player of I remember rightly, take into account the cost of travel etc also it's an expensive team to run, also you need to take into account there is no prize money at any level of French rl,

The federation have received lots of money for junior/kids licences the last two years and they've played a total of 9 games in this time, and they're still charging full price this year which a few parents have not been impressed with,

Do Lezignan run, arrange any fund raising events or do they just rely on sponsorship?

It it possible that French RL could end up with two pro teams in SL and virtually nothing underneath it?

No, that won’t happen.

At the moment local players, plus whoever don’t make the grade at Catalans make up the semi pro sides.  A few also have the ability to take on imports.

I think what will happen though is that as TO develop, their unwanted academy will also end up more and more in the semi pro game.  Sure, some will go elsewhere but I think the bulk of existing Elite clubs will take some benefit from it.

TO have to get promoted yet and if successful, have to sustain it.

I like your optimism but the initial comment that started the thread, about the state of the lower levels, isn't promising.

Here is a part quote from a local at a French RL forum translated by Google. Maybe a little dramatic but...

For the moment, the situation is deteriorating more than it is improving, despite the exceptional results of our two teams playing abroad. In addition, our elite championship will have some very valuable players this year, which will undoubtedly provide some great encounters.
But besides that, the situation deteriorates dangerously. An elite at 9, an elite 2 who loses two teams a few days before the restart, one or even two DN teams who will not finally leave, similar cases in federal? In short, it's not brilliant and it's starting to seriously worry.
More than a victory for the Dragons, the rise of the TO can be beneficial. With two teams in the Super League plus a league that will certainly not be perfect but will still have a mouthful, it will start to look like something. But the bottom of the pyramid is pitching dangerously and our sport can end up in danger of death....

It takes wisdom to know when a discussion has run its course.

It takes reasonableness to end that discussion.

It appears that Lyon will play - but in the 3rd tier? I'm optimistic because clubs in the Catalan region are re-grouping. For example Baho who are in Elite 2 have put in a team in the U19s Elite competition. You would hope that between Pia, Baho and Ille sur le Tete - two of them could be in Elite 1 in 2023. The Aude next door have three strong clubs. Albi and Avignon look OK. Leaves Villeneuve who have signed Gadwin Springer from Featherstone and have an excellent coach. Nearby Tonneins and Trentels seem to be OK too. If TO make it to SL it will support St Gaudens and other teams like re-formed Toulouse Julies-Julien at Federal level.

Doesn't seem all is lost since Catalans & Toulouse are doing so well in the English competitions. If only PSG were still around.. Catalan also had promising links with FC Barcelona that perhaps they may better yet keep building on. The younger generations would aim to play on the same turf as the world famous football club. I'm sure there may be some barriers with big city clubs and potentially spreading covid, as long as the Federation and clubs can get the right mix of where funds go then they can perhaps get back where they should be.

Lattes Montpellier first game is called off by Montpellier. The Carpentras coach has said lattes where trying to call it off earlier in the week and have now suddenly got a few COVID contact cases! I feel sorry for the 4 English lads if this is how it's going to be like all season!

As I keep saying Montpellier and Toulon are pipe dreams only Perpignan and Toulouse can sustain clubs at elite level in both codes.

Outside of the current elite 1 clubs I would concentrate on traditional areas to reboot the game.

Anything new can be organic on the back of.the proposed WC.

Do you think Carcassonne and Avignon could/should be added to the English Leagues?

With Jason Baitieri and James Maloney on board later this year will give the comp even more interest especially in the Aude. Catalan area will be better the year after. It's a shame that they go with 9 in Elite 1. Far too early I think - we need TO to be sorted.

Ludovic Pena: "The Sharks club would like to clarify that it will keep its commitment to the Elite 2 season"

WRITTEN BY NICOLAS · OCTOBER 4, 2021

Ludovic Pena, coach of the Montpellier Sharks reacted to the failure to hold his team's first match and to the words of Jérôme Alonso, coach of Carpentras.

The Sharks club wants to put things in context following the latest statements by the Carpentras coach. We requested the postponement of the match following 3 contact cases within the staff and players. We first proceeded to develop a certificate on the player's honor. This was the only solution we had urgently. Subsequently, we contacted the Rugby Federation of 13 to inform them of the situation. We were put in touch with the doctor of the federation who gave us the protocol to follow. We asked the player who had been in contact with a Covid-positive person to provide the document with the QR code so that we could send it to the Federation and validate an official document, which was done. In addition, we cancelled Friday's training and informed the players and staff of the situation. We were obliged to have the entire team tested for Wednesday, highlighting the fact that only a negative test would allow them to return to the field, thus applying the health protocol that is imposed on all of us.

The Sharks club would like to clarify that it will keep its commitment to Elite 2 season, contrary to rumors and false information circulating on social networks, beyond such situations, beyond our control.
We call on everyone to be responsible. We invite interested parties to come and check the truth of the facts with the Club President before taking advantage of social networks to unload their opinion, hatred or anger through it, with the intention of damaging the image and reputation of the latter, as well as by generating a form of humiliation concerning the club and the players detected in contact case and their families. In this regard, the club reserves the right to refer it to the competent authorities, it must protect the integrity of each licensee.

In a unique and still current health context with a virus that continues to circulate, we must still continue to protect each other. We deplore the postponement of the first game that frustrates two teams that had been preparing for weeks.

That's a huge announcement!
