Well it was quoted by Richard Boardman last year that RL players were suing the game. More RU players are suing the IRB, RFU and WRU though.

A substantial number of ex footballers are suing the FA as well.

This is really sad, I remember Bobby/Bobbie during his one stellar season at Leeds. He was the absolute star of the show.

That doesn't mean I'm not at the same time repulsed by the Daily Mail, its headline and its revolting attitude to our sport.

Some very sad news indeed here, as Bobby Goulding has been diagnosed with dementia.

How marvellous that the Daily Mail`s "Chief sports reporter" can tell the difference between RL and RU.

BBC take note - this is what specialist reporting looks like.

Would have been terribly disappointing to see a headline of "Rugby in the Dock", and an opening salvo about "Rugby legend Bobby Goulding".

Not the time for points scoring, concentrate on sad story of an ex-player going through a tough time

Sorry to learn Goulding has early onset dementia but how was the RFL supposed to protect these players? Did we/the RFL know the facts on brain issues when Goulding started playing?

There was a recent case of a similar claim in Aus which was rejected out.  I think, this was one of the reasons.

Best wishes to Bobby in his dealing with this.  Always a great player, chippy and very skilled.

Perhaps the two clowns on Sky will stop coming out with comments such as: nothing wrong with that, just a bit of bish bash, all good for the game,a slap wont hurt him,I'm sure he didn't mean it,it was much worse in my day,he'll be ok after a short rest etc, etc.

In Union now, contact with the head is a minimum of a penalty, usually a yellow and often a red. No ifs, no buts, the defending player has a duty of care to the opponent, so no excuses of being off balance, slipped,he dipped down etc, etc. Union is miles ahead of league on this aspect. Same applies to tackling a player in the air,the attacker has a duty of care,if he gets in wrong, for whatever reason,it is a minimum yellow and nowadays, usually red. Again,no excuses.

Best wishes to him, it must be very scary.

Was a bit weird in the Mail article where he states players had to take baseline cognitive tests and admits that he as a player was involved in manipulating the results. I imagine his lawyers cringed when they read that.

I was born to run a club like this. Number 1, I do not spook easily, and those who think I do, are wasting their time, with their surprise attacks.

Daily mail headline Re rugby LEAGUE?  Oh yeh, hang on, it’s bad news isn’t it so needs reporting.  We’ll go back to being totally ignored again for the next 364 days.

As for the story, so so sad.  People getting battered around the head repeatedly for years and years for an absolute pittance, retiring with numerous life long physical and now seemingly neurological issues…..for an average of £70,000 a year for their trouble?  Awesome.  Why the hell would anyone bother, seriously?

My sport is an absolute joke sadly….

Shontayne Hape, quite a few years ago, revealed that players were encouraged to manipulate their test results. He and Goulding retired quite a long time ago, so I'd be interested to know if this is still happening.

I woke this morning and switched on the radio, to hear that the Today programme has, like the Mail, suddenly heard of Rugby League now there's a crisis.

I was at primary school with Bobby, he was a brilliant player even at the age of 7, one of those people who would spend hours a day with a rugby ball after school had finished. I know how much he enjoys spending time with his grandkids,  this is pretty sad news.

Sadly, I suspect there's a few non-rugby related things in his career that a tough lawyer will bring up as possible factors if he does go down the legal route.

We run the risk of disappearing completely as a sport if this doesn't get dealt with properly.

If it were petty points-scoring, you`d have a case. It goes without saying that any injury or illness is a sad story. Where`s the value in reiterating such an obvious truth?

There is literally no way of completely eradicating accidental contact with the head in RL. Every tackle, whether you are the ball-carrier or defender, entails a risk.

Only if the possibility of long-term injury means the game cannot continue to be played would the Daily Mail`s attempt to harm it not matter.

Terrible for Goulding and all the other players affected, however suing the RFL, other than enforcing change of how current players are treated, i don't know what they ate hoping to get out of them. They are not the RFU or FA who have cash coming out of their *****, it could kill the organisation off. Also the insurance for all clubs is going to go through the roof. Could the game afford to keep going on the back of this?

£70,000 a year? ,well they are the lucky ones.  Most rugby players get far less than that. Indeed most rugby players play the game for fun. Then a lot play every week for years.

Some parents will conclude that the game is too dangerous for young kids and perhaps they are right. At the very least the authorities and amatuer clubs should make headguards compulsory, even though the efficacy of headguards is problematic.

Why should clubs deal with the risk of concussion, by making something compulsory that increases the risk of concussion?

Yes, that's what I meant by "problemetic"

Statement from RFL

“The Rugby Football League has recently been contacted by solicitors representing a number of former players.

The RFL takes player safety and welfare extremely seriously, and has been saddened to hear about some of the former players’ difficulties.

Rugby League is a contact sport and while there is an element of risk to playing any sport, player welfare is always of paramount importance.

As a result of scientific knowledge, the sport of Rugby League continues to improve and develop its approach to concussion, head injury assessment, education, management and prevention across the whole game. We will continue to use medical evidence and research to reinforce and enhance our approach.”

as awful as this is, and I feel genuinely sorry for Bobby or anyone else who contracts dementia but how does anyone prove this is as a result of playing rugby league, or any sport for that matter and not just back luck!

What about the millions of ex-football, RU and RL players worldwide who haven't had any adverse effects of playing sport.

If claims like this are successful then that's the end of all contact sport as the usual 'no win no fee' floodgates will open and every person who has ever played sport will be lodging claims against the governing body, BARLA, or worse still community clubs and their officials
