Fax fans were asked to pick a name in the early super league era, irc they chose “bombers” by a fairly convincing margin.

Nigel Wood put the kibosh on that and came up with the awful “blue sox” name

How long did Blue Sox actually last?

Can’t remember tbh, no one took to it so no one really noticed when it went

Until 2002. But for the 2002 season, the original club crest had returned to the shirt, and a separate "Blue Sox" logo was shunted to the other side.

That's 5-6 years which is the standard amount of time required to unpick a Nigel Wood brainfart.

Fan pressure made Trinity drop the ludicrous Wildcats moniker. Silly cartoon animal badge, an animal with no known connection with the club replaced by the unique Trinity title and the classic Fleur-de-lis badge, a master stroke.

Sales of replica kits and other merchandise shot through the roof whist the yoof were not the least bit upset.

I hate these brandings and I don't think they achieve anything. People point out the Bulls experience but for me 99% of the effect came from a brilliant team that won on the pitch and 1% at best the name change. Had they remained Bradford Northern I doubt the effect would have been any different.

It annoys me that if I go onto the Warrington website and look at past results, it doesn't matter when a game was played - even as far back as 1895 - but the opponents will always be credited with their current nickname.

Thought Hull were now the blacknwhites as that's all i ever hear them referred to on the telly.

We were the 'barracudas' in the early/mid 80's and our 'A' team were the 'Piranhas' - Dont even ask, even Fartown got a new name - Arena 84, although still sounds better than some of the ridiculous sponsored gobfuls we have today.

Sounds like the sort of bloke who'd be useful at your house on Shrove Tuesday.

As for the players underneath him, if they're any relation to Jai, what a nightmare of a backline to kick to on the last tackle.

Leigh, were locally known as "The Comics" presumably because inevitably the season would turn into a laughing stock?, I know this goes back a long way I am aware it was used in the 50's but I never learned the correct reason why.

Sits back awaiting the explanation from the useual suspects whenever Leigh is mentioned on these pages.

I wonder if they considered Leigh Locomotive?

I always wondered why Leigh had Parky Pig as a mascot. Maybe they weren't to be outdone by Hartlepool's antics and decided to give a pig the electric chair.

I was born to run a club like this. Number 1, I do not spook easily, and those who think I do, are wasting their time, with their surprise attacks.

Said it before and I'll say it again ....my kids love the mascots and animal/silly names of all the teams. It's one of the few things they ask questions about when the games are on our telly .....they can name them all in SL and  NRL now...and most of the Champ ones ....though I'll admit that girls from the Home counties might not be the target market for rugby league!

They should be.

That was because at the time they were sponsored by Parkside Motors from Bolton.

York Lokomotiv have been playing for quite a while? And of course Lokomotiv Sofia playing in the Balkan league this season - I did like the fact that they were playing against a team called Arsenal fro Montenegro.

I assume the Montenegrin team are linked to Arsenal Tivat football club, who are named after the naval arsenal that was in the town when they were founded.
