Montpellier Sharks

As could be expected, this club has just made a second forfeit and will not travel to Villefranche because they do not have any players. The 4 English players left supposedly for visa problems. I wonder where is Leon Pryce who was due to arrive soon and where is the partnership with Lamborghini? I also wonder how two successive presidents of the French federation were able to give credit to this scam. I was also very surprised to see that Rugby League World magazine could devote a promotional article to this club knowing that everyone had a lot of doubts! After Toulon, Lyon here is Montpellier which is leaving Elite2 ... It is time to conduct a real development policy based on existing clubs which have solid foundations! Toronto, Ottawa, New-York, Montpellier nothing but mirages ...

They're looking to set up a partnership with the AS corbières team, a team of Lézignan gypsies, one or two could play elite 2 but the rest are just there to play with their family and friends.

Was it a travel  visa problem or a visa bank card that didn't have any money for them? Poor lads!

Good to see you're not one to jump ship at the first sign of a bit of bad weather. We can only salute the sort of loyalty and determination to overcome difficulties that marks you out as a real fan.

And yet here you are, posting on a Rugby League forum

I'm not going to defend Montpellier's forfeits (which are both very concerning, especially so early in the season) and I can't talk to what promises they may had made to the FFRXIII and may have broken, however I do want to say that from a Pacifique Treize perspective they have met every promise they made from a financial / contra and pathways perspective.

Encouraging to hear, I think the owner burned his bridges with a lot of the rugby league playing community when most of the players never got paid or given what they where promised, so no one will risk taking a playing licence at lattes Montpellier.

It could be a great opportunity for RL playing students from bigger clubs to get free accommodation and a bit of spending money whilst playing RL and studying, but it's too big of a risk with this club,

I loved my time at Montpellier, some of the best times of my life and still have lots  of good friends from there, but I got everything I was promised from the other Montpellier club ( although not everyone did!) It's definitely a great place to live for a few years as a young lad!

My take on all of this is that it shows again that the FFR13 have to concentrate on the traditional clubs and assist where the game was strong has a history and needs re-inventing.

Big city dreams in France  is ridiculous one should take secondary international matches to new places where the audience will be green and will adore a French home win then if some local falls in love with the game and wants to start a small club its win win all round.

Once again I repeat

Carpentras

Salon

Roanne

Le Reole

Tonniens

Corsica

Etc etc etc

I have a list back home in Spain of defunct French clubs and areas I will post here when i am back in a couple of weeks it makes interesting reading (And is also very sad)

What about Marseille? Football mad city but Marseille xiii was an integral part of France‘ golden RL era. For big matches they turned out in big numbers. Now they play under the radar in DN?!?

What about Bordeaux xiii though? Any chance to revive RL there.

I'm guessing that this is the same list I once had, detailing by department etc

It makes for sobering, and really depressing reading. At one time almost every area of France (north apart) has had a Rugby League club.

Didn't the original Marseille club fold?

Yes but re-founded 15ish ago. Dunno the background but I meant they once were strong and have a history. Marseille is a big city and I am not aware of a big RU club. Lot‘s of tick the boxes compared to Montpellier.
… and Guasch wants the derby vs TO13 to be played there.

If I remember rightly Marseille where fast tracked into elite 1 a few years ago and never finished the season. They tried to implant a union club in Marseille and even signed Jonah lomu. It didn't last long.

I am convinced Barnyia that the way to go is support for traditional clubs and places where league has a history.

Again, I‘d have thought Marseille belong to clubs/cities with a history.

And I‘d say that is the reason why Guasch wants a game at the Velodrom and not Montpellier or somewhere else.

It will certainly grow the brand that's for sure the difference in France is that the local Marie/region always gets behind things in a brilliant way across all political spectrums.

What are your thoughts on Toulouse and Catalans setting up academies in cities such as Marseille, Montpellier, Toulon and Lyon?

It would help provide new players for both clubs and also promote their brands. Additionally it would support the clubs in those cities mentioned above by supporting with junior development

I wrote the Rugby League World article (I used to work for the publication) so I can answer as to why I did. Similarly, I had doubts - but I was contacted by the club to promote their  new venture. I had considered doing an article about the doubts but I decided I would let them promote themselves. Had I have still worked at the magazine now, I would have done an article about the issues they are facing to balance the books - if you like. But I wouldn’t have done an article hammering them before they had any problems - because that’s never going to help them survive and thrive. I don’t think it would be fair to not give them a positive springboard, nor do I think it is fair to judge a now non-existent publication on a two-year-old article in retrospect. Hope that explains your comment. This wasn’t a hostile answer either, I totally concur about the doubts we all shared, but the primary function of the magazine was to try and promote worldwide Rugby League not sink any expansion attempts.

Just reading about history of League in France. It used to rival union in the number of clubs and popularity. Then union had the Vichy gov ban it because of its working class roots and links to the UK. They stole the grounds and equipment which was never returned. Players had to stop playing or switch to union. Even after the war, league was allowed to use the word rugby and it was still banned in schools.

Just shows you that union can only ever get ahead by cheating or holding League down.
