Penryn is the site of two modern university campuses with all the sporting facilities including a £4 million sports centre for community use, Falmouth Uni has over 6000 students and Exeter Uni has 2500 students. I guess there may be recruitment from there. And as has been pointed out there are regular flights from Leeds and Manchester that only take an hour.

Blimey, how tin pot do you want semi professional rugby league teams to be. It’s one game a season, have you asked the existing L1 teams if they want to go to Cornwall or are you just assuming they don’t?

Assuming they can’t afford it. It’s only a few seasons ago when some of the clubs couldn’t even afford to play a proper league structure as in home and away fixtures

sometimes you have to take a step backwards to move forward

Despite the knockers on here, the game could do with more guys like Perez. This guy has battled  along and who knows what he could have achieved if it hadn't have been for Covid. Many  would have thrown the towel in by now and if he read these columns he most probably would.

I hope RL in Cornwall is a massive success. I don't see it being so with him involved.

How successful is your Rugby League start up?

Starting a club is always difficult and usually it is the critics who do little but post that think they have some.inaide running.

Traditional Rugby League fans are the worst thing about Rugby League.

I have no more idea than anyone else whether this will work or not.

But some people on here and in RL in general, are just way too snidey and negative about *anyone* coming into RL. Actually, make that everyone.

Wether it's the Hearn geezer who definitely shouldn't be involved as he isn't brilliant at everything or Perez - who's generated more publicity for RL than all of us here ever will but isn't to be trusted. Absolutely not.

To use a well worn George Burns saying...."it's a pity all the guys who are passionate about RL and know how to start new clubs are posting on TRL instead of doing it"

I'm not the first one to say this but trying nothing new and hoping that Wigan and St Helens get to the finals every year is not a good long term plan for the future. It could well be that something apparently off the wall is what works well.

That's not to say it will of course but this constant suspicion and dismissive attitude is totally boring

They will do well to get anything out of Falmouth Uni or Exeter Uni in Cornwall with regards to player partnerships.

Falmouth is a Creative Arts specialist and is the equivalent of asking Leeds Arts University to become a feeder institution. It just doesnt make sense.
Exeter Uni have a small representation at Penryn. Their core offer is around mining and ecological/environmental studies.

Apart from working with the universities to access the sports facilities, there will be no students that create a pathway to playing. Not unless someone sits down with the universities to create one.

The Falmouth uni scene (I was at Exeter but then served in Falmouth with the navy) is a high octane mix of beyond-alternative-lifestyle hippies, Cornish studies, and (white) South African mining students. Exeter (including its Falmouth campus) is currently extraordinarily good at RU thanks to having got sewn up tight with Exeter Chiefs.

I'm making no comment on whether this new club is a good idea, but I'd be astonished if the university side of Falmouth came to anything.

Anyway, as an RU fan whose team played in the same league as Cornish Pirates until recently, what I will say is that the key to sport at any sensible level in Cornwall is getting the Stadium for Cornwall built. Without it, Pirates can't get into the RU premiership (which they want to do, and have got the money to do, but have been fighting a 10 year planning battle) - when it comes off they're moving to Truro as anchor tenant.

But until then it is a struggle to get sponsorship - basically everything goes to Pirates and Plymouth Argyle, though worth noting the (negative) impact on RU from Chiefs hoovering up support from the west of the Duchy that can get to Exeter.

All I hope (genuinely, because I want it to work) is that they've done more than stuck a pin in a map, and learned from the experiences of Cornwall's leading RU club in England's most RU county, and how they've hosed millions (genuinely) so far banging their head against a wall.

By that logic, we may as well shut the forum unless we are all international players, top grade refs, broadcasters and business people.

Let's celebrate the Skolars and the Bears who crawl before they can walk, let alone turn up at the Olympics.
