European City Breaks. Recommendations pls.

In addition to Barcelona I'm looking at planning another 3 day City Break with my partner in Europe next year. I won't have the biggest of budgets but also don't want to scrimp and scrape if the makes sense.

Prague. It’s immense and the beer is first rate.

Just don’t go drinking in Wenceslas Square, especially if with the Mrs.

That said, I did actually……but watch it, a lot of dodgy rip off joints.

Anywhere south and east of Munich/Vienna will be reasonably priced and are nice cities - Ljubljana, Split, Bratislava. Probably Zagreb as well but not been to that one

Any of the polish cities or if you want it really cheap go to the polish countryside,

I was going to say Poland .

Poznan was good for a weekend break . 

Also have a parkrun . 

Commonwealth war graves area plus Russian/ polish memorials brings home how brutal war is . 

Gdansk was fantastic .  Also a parkrun .

Done Poznan with ex but yes there's loads of place there.

I liked Reykjavik but it took a while to get there from Hull at 15 knots. For a short break you might want to fly from Manchester instead although you would miss out on the thrill of riding the mountainous seas of the North Atlantic. Less chance of seeing the Northern Lights too.

Bratislava's a shout. Is it easy to get to Vienna from there?

Very easy by train - a couple of trains per hour. Takes 60 - 75 mins. Rail Europe is a good website to plan rail journeys

Did a very good walking tour around Bratislava in 2019. Its free - but you pay what you think is suitable. Took about 3 hours. Loads of good info for the rest of the stay

Had a day in Vienna but felt it was nowhere near enough

Absolutely beautiful city, would be near the top of my list of favourite places. Tuscany in general is a great base.

Staying with Italy I also think Turin is a much underrated city. As befits the first capital city of a united Italy the place is absolutely full of outstanding architecture and you've got the breathtaking beauty of the Alps just down the road. Goes without saying the food is great too, it's Italy.

I'd definitely plan to do both - Bratislava is fun, but it's not that big. The train (or coach, or riverboat along the Danube) is pretty quick and the main things to do in Vienna are all very walkable.

I'd go for Budapest over Prague. Venice & Rome worthy options too.

Zagreb feels quite uncrowded by tourists - very different from Split or Dubrovnik or the Croatian coast and islands. You can draw your own conclusions about why that it is

Good point re the river boat option (wasn't running when I was there)

About 3 or 4 per day, similar travel time compared to the train. Quite expensive vs train IIRC

Well thank you. Did Bratislava and what a place. Immense. £1.34 for cheapest pint. Near the president's palace. Imagine that in London. Hit Vienna too but didn't give it enough time. Thanks for the suggestions. Plus some news may be abounding.......
