A season ticket including group Challenge Cup games would have more value and sell for a higher price, meaning those games that are currently poorly attended and loss makers would have the same value as a Super League game. Groups in the cup has worked for Rugby Union and Football, why not Rugby League?

I think the problem with the comparison you are making is that the groups are in European Competitions. Those competitions mean that your club are playing different, high quality, opposition. You dont just want a one hit and out and the lesser clubs that are in can make huge money from the game pulling in fans at their home ground so want more than one game against the big boys.Ā

IF this were to be done for the challenge cup you wouldnt get people going to the "lesser" club from one of the big clubs because it isnt a jolly to a place they have never been, its down the road.. you wont get loads of people coming in from the local area to watch the "big team" because if they wanted to do that they would go and watch them. Equally for the "big clubs" of Super League any of the matches against Super League opposition will be "yet another game" which is part of the problem of loop fixtures now.Ā

If we want to replace Loop Fixtures (which we should) then they need to be replaced by one of: 1 international matches, 2 a new "world club challenge" as per the super league ones (not going to happen), 3 New clubs entering the league and adding their home and away matches.. (1 or 3 for me).. replacing them with more loop fixtures branded as the challenge cup is going to make naff all difference to be fair.Ā

I dont mind the idea of groups but lets be fair its not going to solve the issues that we are trying to solve. The Challenge Cup is going the way of the FA Cup and the old Pilkington Cup in RU.. the way to revamp is to make the games themselves something special.. if, for example, the league was conference based then it would be the only time some teams would play each other potentially (or at least at that venue).. give the winners an automatic Play off spot (the 6th spot) which may make teams and fans take it more seriously etc..Ā

It needs something but i dont see groups making much difference at all.

Ā The Community clubs provide 26 , a mixture of NCL and regional , as well as Forces etc.

The NCL clubs are selected by final league positions ( 46 to go at ) and usually infill down the line to provide cover for those clubs who chose not to enter.

Should be some entertaining games especially once League 1 enter the fray.

It starts before the season starts, why would anyone take this competition seriously anymore?

It becomes a pre season tournament

The gate money is split differently so it would mean progressing would see the home side forking out money to the away team for evey round. This would be money mostly collected at the stary of the season.

Apparently before BARLA formed in the 1970s they had regional qualifying rounds to reduce the number of amateur clubs to two. I don't know any more details than that, I just remember being told it by one of the older posters on here once.

Wasn't it the county cup winnersĀ

Carlsberg don't do Soldiers, but if they did, they would probably be Brits.

If every team had 2 guaranteed home games from the pool matches the gates wouldnā€™t need to be split, just as they are not split for Super League games.

If the cup got down to the last 8 teams before adding 12 Super League teams that would give us 20 teams to go into 4 groups of 5, with 2 home and 2 away games for each club. The winner of each group can progress into the Cup Semi Final. The Championship and League One clubs that donā€™t make the group stages could play their own cup competition like the 1895 Cup.

It wouldnt work as one off shocks wouldnt happen and the magic is lost.

Imagine a lower level team beating a SL team to then say it doesnt matter as its a pool game

One off shocks would still happen, the lower league team would just be unlikely to reach the semi final, as they are now anyway even if they cause an upset in the last 16.

Thereā€™s no reward for that shock, pointless extra games for the lower league clubs

We run at well under one genuine shock per year in the Challenge Cup. This isn't soccer with its randomness.

Basing a set-up on the magic of upsets is guaranteed to end in failure.

I think the Jan 15/16 start will see some community clubs not entering.

I think there is some merit in making the CC exclusively a British comp. Take any cross border planning out, take out financial burden/risk and allow it to be a traditional/heritage British Comp.
Ā

That may also open up a longer term Euro Comp for SL teams, or allow additional French cups, or provide a stable future model should any other expansion teams join SL (which Iā€™m a fan of)

Virtually the entire Ipswich squad of the time, no less. Albeit a few turned out for the Nazis, which @Eddieprobably approves of.Ā

Yes think they had just won the UEFA Cup or finish 2nd in the league so they were a very good team.

Loved John Wark, great midfielder the film is worth watching just to see his line in his thick Scottish accent.... as well as teaching Pele a few skills.Ā
