challenge cup 2022

So we have to win four rounds just for the chance of drawing a SL club.

In the 32 teamstraight knock out open draw used in the 60s and 70s four wins would have seen us in the final.

Why do we bother entering….no money spinner any more and risks injuries that affect our league chances.

Could not agree more - I hate the fact that there is seeding so it is a an obvious conclusion that the final will be between two super league teams - probably from the top half of the super league table.

If all the teams were in draw as it used to be - heaven knows maybe some of the super league teams would knock each other out in the early rounds and leave a pathway for a lower division club - but that's a pipe dream as the powers that be would die at the thought of two lower division teams making the final.

If a super league team draws a lower division club well then can always put out their reserve team .........in the past the difference between top and bottom of the league was as great as it is between full and part time teams...............

the 1895 cup is a very poor relation to the challenge cup - played in front of a near empty stadium - heaven forbid super league team supporters should get to the ground to watch both matches ! They didn't even have the video ref in place for the 1895 cup final - obviously not important enough................

As an Oldham supporter, and I'm sure Rochdale & Swinton fans would agree, it would still be very nice to reach the final 🙂

We used to reach the final every year, went on the train.

Consolation competitions are garbage.  “ There you are you crappy little clubs, go and play each other even more so someone can win something…just dont expect anyone to pay to watch”

Back in 1984 York were in the second division, didnt get near promotion but got to semi final of challenge cup beating a classy Cas in QF and pushing that great widnes team of the era all the way in the SF.

That was rugby league.

Looking forward to our second round home tie with Midlands Hurricanes,

1pm - 30 January.

For those who cannot be there: BBC IPlayer and BBC Sport’s website/App.

Celebrating our 1922 final victory……… alas, probably not in the final!

Some excellent 2022 promotional opportunities for Hornets.

Seeding, in my opinion, has destroyed the challenge cup. So what if Leeds are drawn against Wigan in the early rounds!!!! That the luck of the draw. Having lower clubs getting through, because of the luck of the draw is what made it magic. Having the same 4 or 5 clubs getting through is boring. The challenge cup is not there to find the best club overall. That's what the league system is for. The challenge cup is about dreams. In 1989-90, lowly 2nd div Oldham beat Huddersfield, Workington, Salford and Widnes, only to lose in the semi final to John Holdsworth and Warrington. The town was buzzing. That's the real magic of the cup. Unfortunately it's now dead.

Do you remember the farce of big clubs season ticket holders getting in Challenge Cup ties at away grounds for free thus depriving lower clubs of a bumper pay day. That in itself tells you  everything about the RFL. I think that Super League teams should play for the 1895 cup but change it to the year Super League formed and let the rest play for the Challenge Cup.

You've got to remember sooperdooperleeg runs all things Rugby League.

The thought of one of them being knocked out in an early round would end their season. It's a closed shop and that is why our great game in is such mess.

Looking on the bright side, we have two local derbies to look forward to - our own mini trophy with bragging rights to who ever comes top.

Stuff sooperdooperleeg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes And each club were required to pay for a pre determined number of cup final tickets and left to sell them to their supporters.

And we think the Rugby Union leadership are dodgy….couldn’t hold a candle to the shysters who have been running our game for last 25 years
