Mitchell Pearce to Catalans

Recommended Posts

As suspected for a few months, it’s on…

https://www.nrl.com/news/2021/11/15/pearce-granted-immediate-knights-release/

Great buy, he’s a grafter not a prima donna, exactly the sort of player who’ll go well in our league I reckon.

Apparently this site says I "won the day" here on 23rd Jan, 19th Jan, 9th Jan also 13th December, whatever any of that means. Anyway, 4 times in a few weeks? The forum must be going to the dogs - you people need to seriously up your game. Where's Dutoni when you need him?

Good signing for Catalan.  I don't think they are losing anything at all swapping Pearce in for Maloney.

The organisational aspect and kicking game is the main thing. They are looking for a half back to help them reach and win big games.

Gone are the days these guys used to be going to Wigan.

As a Newcastle fan watched a lot of Pearce over the last few years. I think it’s a really good signing for Catalans.

Pearce is an on field leader. Plays with awesome effort and determination. He leads a team around really well and is a good defender. Really good habit of making a clutch play, be it a key 40/20 or match winning field goal.

The downside is his kicking game is poor. Short kicking struggles to find the in goal and his long kicking game results in lots of aimless bombs landing around the 20m mark. His running game has also suffered as he gets older and he been injured the last few years.

Overall a good halfback, who will lead the team around really well and make others better.

Are the good old highlights package, funny how every player looks an absolute world beater on them, even Jai Field

Yep it is pure BS hype, but this highlights package he has 7 on his back in every clip and it's mixed with big games and SOO games. etc.

The NRL now see Catalans as a club that will pay marquee rates for top players and that means they will get talked about on TV shows, media reports and other things. They were even covering Maloney's last few games and his run to the GF. Leeds, Saints and Wigan used to enjoy this sort of thing regularly.

Tbf Warrington did one for Billy Magoulias recently in which he did three unspectacular hit ups, one nice chip over the top and a few regulation tackles. Kept my expectations well in check.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

Pearce is an excellent replacement for Maloney, on paper. I do have my concerns about him though, mainly due to the wear and tear he's incurred. He seemed past his best in the last season at Newcastle and troubled by injury. He doesn't have the running game he used to but that shouldn't be a concern because nor did Maloney. He'll bring the direction they require, I just hope he stays fit and he doesn't suffer the same fate that Joel Thompson did at Saints

Maybe Leeds,Saints & Wigan are more concerned with players who they think will help them win premierships.

Your talking Mitchell Pearce here not Johnathan Thurston although I hear Sterlo has time on his hands now,we could always give him a 1 year deal, his highlight reel will be superb.

If there is one stat that shows the difference in profile of the game in Australia and over here it is that Mitchell Pearce was the Most Googled Australian in 2016.  Not the most Googled sports star but the most searched for person in the whole country.

(I that unfortunately not just for his on field play but that is not my point).

The reality is the high profile Aussie players love the lifestyle in France + the fact that the journalists only report on the footy.

Without naming names I remember one of the high profile imports driving his club car into a ditch ###### and falling asleep in it:) A combination of the police and myself took him home arranged a tow truck and nothing else was said apart from a couple of free tickets for the local boys in blue they actually found it amusing .

That and the travel opportunities. It's a very easy way for players to get paid to do some sightseeing around Europe.

I follow a few of the Leeds overseas players on social media and every time there is a long turnaround or a week off, they're in some European capital. It's a big selling point for them.

You`re absolutely dead right, the profile of the French club Catalans has never been higher over here the last 8 weeks. I think the popularity and quotability of James Maloney and Catalans run to the GF has helped enormously. But you`d have to be living under a rock to not know now that Rugby League is played in France.

I`m expecting having Toulouse in the Super League is only going to increase the profile.

There must be a lot of living under a rock people in France 😂 but it did get a few seconds on local TV and national papers.

Hopefully it will continue next season. Especially with a big  french city team now playing in the top division.
