Leeds was a dump in the 70s, especially the nightlife, where spit and sawdust ruled. It's always been big. The removal of admin from Wakefield made it irrelevant.

The police are no longer in the city. The establishment of WMDC and subsequent spreading of funds was another blow to the city.

Is Leeds more accessible than Wakefield? The city centre road system is terrible. Maybe when the trolley bus opens😉

Mining closures hit the Wakefield District hard, but Leeds' industrial base was also devastated.

I've not been out in Wakefield for 10 years plus, so I don't know the current levels, but driving through on a weekend evening, the streets look pretty dead.

Wakefield must reinvent itself, but the changes in retail make it an uncertain future.

The monorail will be the catalyst to riches.....

Looks like Cas may have resigned to staying put at Wheldon Road judging by their statement to this:

“As part of the club’s long-term plans to improve facilities at our home stadium on Wheldon Road, Castleford Tigers is hopeful of applying for the full £2 million if passed by Wakefield Council’s Cabinet meeting on Monday, 29th November.”

I'm not sure the £2m on offer is intended to (or indeed could) be used for 'stadium upgrades'

Excellent stuff, that should buy a lot of CAD drawings of new stands and stadia over the  next 5-10 years that then never get built, I’m looking forward to seeing the pictures already

Apparently this site says I "won the day" here on 23rd Jan, 19th Jan, 9th Jan also 13th December, whatever any of that means. Anyway, 4 times in a few weeks? The forum must be going to the dogs - you people need to seriously up your game. Where's Dutoni when you need him?

Absolutely brilliant book, in fact the whole series of decade based books are brilliant.

Sanderbrook is one of the most neutral of historical writers. He’s not a Tory but better still he’s not a pocket socialist who reimagines a working class Camelot, no soppy them were the days ######.

A bit o/t but I find Sandbrook does go a little far out of his way to downplay cultural trends of national importance because he thinks there is a bias towards power centres and London. I'm sympathetic to this view (although he rarely mentions Rugby League) but he understates the level to which the rest of the country eventually followed many of those trends. So whilst as he may claim e.g. the so-called Swinging Sixties or Carnaby Street scene involved directly a tiny number of people, the trends and fashions which came out of that, often with a fair amount of time lag, were very important to the rest of the country eventually.

Nonetheless, his series with its granular look at life through the 20th Century is a really valuable resource.

Oh do shut up.

Oooo grumpy, if a bit of mild ribbing isn't allowed here anymore that's half the content gone. Might be a blood sugar thing? Time to get yourself a cup of tea and a biscuit I think mate

I do think that just like Wakefield staying at Belle Vue that this could be a better outcome for Cas. A £2 million loan plus whatever additional grants they can source and if they could get access to the same type of loans that Wakefield are then they could really make big improvements to Wheldon Road with a couple of new stands.

There's a fun game you can play (genuinely, it's quite shocking how accurate you can get it) where you can date 1960 to about 1980 photos of Britain by looking at what people are wearing, thinking about when that would be fashionable in London, then adding a couple of years for every 100 miles or so north.

I've never lived in London.

It goes a bit wrong from the early 80s, when you look at the strike pickets, etc, but until about 1982 in say Seaham or Hartlepool it was about 1976.

The internet, fast fashion and all the rest of it has made everything much more uniform than it used to be.

CAD drawings? Drawings? It's all BIM these days , even for small projects like Cas's.

To be honest just the one stand would do for now. All clubs these days need a HUB, a facility that is modern and houses everything a modern club needs. This is the stand that attracts corporate cash, the prawn sandwich brigade, more middle class/urban professionals etc type people. We can deride them all we like but per person they tend to bring in way more cash than the average grassroots fans.

Your average Cas fan will stand where they have always stood and will almost certainly be delighted to do so. But it's the new blood that will fund a more competitive team and a sustainable club. RL will die if it doesn't reach new fans and to do that it has to offer a better product.

Atmosphere is not enough and WR like BV can't offer the facilities to attract let alone keep these more fluid types of people.

I agree and I was initially just going to put one stand. I thought though that if the means existed to develop 2 then they may as well try.

Mate I was being generous - to be honest based on previous Cas and Wakey history, it’s more likely to be Etch-a-Sketch 😂

You play in a 3 sided ground, that was within a dog track and benefitted massively from a supportive council paying for your community stand.

You really don't hold the moral high ground. You should just be happy your situation has played out better than Wakey's.

Nah pal, we watched as other clubs took 10 years of Sky money and spent it on players to survive mid-table, lobbying to get RFL standards tweaked to protect themselves, whilst sneering at us povs wallowing in the lower leagues and told us "we don't need more than one club in Hull". All whilst having 4 or 5 sides clustered in West Yorkshire. Despite all the hurdles stuck in front of people outside of the initial SL clique, we then sorted ourselves out, and sorted our facilities out, using our own time and effort rather than looking for that miracle pass.

And yes, that included building stakeholder relationships with others to help achieve those improvements... nobody came to the ground offering that stuff up. From removing the dog track and laying an expensive new pitch, the initial extension of the East Stand terrace, the temporary north seating, the long lobbying road to build a North Stand (that also supports the local community regeneration), through to the creative 'Craven Streat' of the last season. That's just intelligent, self-driven good practice. Takes effort, community engagement, and comes in small increments each of which look unimpressive on their own versus a Halliwell Jones or Saints new build. Hell, you might even only end up with a refurbed 3-sided ground at the end of it...

...but eventually, bit by bit, next thing you know 15 years have gone and we're slowly getting there. Meanwhile, others have done nothing, barely a tin of paint, waiting for the 'big one' that will never come.

I always say that Hull KR deserve a huge amount of credit for what they have achieved and the attendances they now get. They have come such a long way in the last couple of decades or so.

Your ignorance is on show for all to see.

The bit in bold is truly amusing. There was nothing noble in what HKR did, there was no great plan and there were no great sacrifices. HKR didn't play in SL for most of the last 25 years because your teams were rubbish! But you kid yourself old lad whilst I chuckle away.
