Clubs printing programmes in 2022

I have some inside knowledge here re the Oldham programme.  In all honesty, I don't think 100 print copies would sell although I do accept your wider point.

Fair play mate. 😉

So, 50 copies. A decent PDF prog, and it is decent because I bought one last year, must take hours of some media guy's time. How many pdfs do they sell? 20? Printing off a bunch and selling them at the ground would surely be worthwhile. Not a money spinner, but still......

Yet, oddly, several non-league football clubs very close to Oldham - such as Ashton United, Hyde United and Stalybridge Celtic - still manage to produce a printed match programme (all £2).

Are any of those clubs significantly better supported than Oldham RLFC? Last three league (Northern Premier League) attendances: Ashton 223, Hyde 471, Stalybridge 563.

Incidentally, MatchDayCreative, a North West-based one-man band specialising in producing very smart printed programmes for small clubs, is responsible for the Ashton and Stalybridge programmes.

I'm not a fan of the current design to be honest and it would look a lot better different if it was designed by me.  I had some lofty plans for it that all came to nothing when someone else was landed with the job.  I'm currently just a content contributor.

PDFs were distributed gratis to all season-ticket holders last year together with a few yearly subscribers and single edition purchasers.  It was a bit of a faff to manage the who-gets-what matrix on the club shop website and I think the whole logging-in to access the content put a few people off.  I ended up setting up a simple htpasswd protected site just to host the programme inside a page-flip tool so that the technically challenged got to read the thing.

This year with most Covid related restrictions out of the way it's an all pay situation.  Much easier (for me anyway).

I'm a bit obsessed with the layout and design of programmes.  I like the stuff MatchDayCreative put out.  I'd love to be a similar one-man band.

Check out FootiePrint, who is based in Oswestry. He's got so much work this season, he's had to turn away clubs.

Nice.  When I come across sites like FootiePrint I go down a rabbit hole of looking for any freely available copies of their work just for a look-see.  Half the time I end up looking at club websites thinking, hmmm, maybe they want someone to fix this thing up too.

Think he's planning to expand into club cricket this summer. Maybe rugby league next!

Are you doing York's 2022 programme, Simon?

I am yes. First one on sale Monday night.

So can we confirm which pro teams are intending to do a printed programme this season? Barrow are issuing their usual programme, roughly 44 pages, priced £2.

Most clubs don't seem to care. Leigh, Rochdale and Workington CBA to reply to a Twitter enquiry. Only a couple of the others, as far as I can see, are advertising - online - any sort of programme.

Thus far...

Print: Barrow (£2), Leeds, Rochdale (£3), York (£3).

Digital: Oldham (£3), West Wales (£2).

Among the amateurs...

Print: Bentley (£1), Leigh Miners Rangers (£3, w/a), Thornhill.

It's a very short list!

£3 at Rochdale Hornets today for match specific prog

It was a monthly magazine last time I went but as they may not have a home game for two months I suppose it still could be later in the season

Rochdale did match specific programmes last season. The supporters club put them together.

York did a prog last night v Fev. Three quid.

But my mate couldn't find anyone selling any at the Fev end.

Same thing happened to me at last year's Challenge Cup final.

There wasn’t a programme seller at the away (north) end. I walked through that way from my street parking spot. As far as I could see, there was one guy (seemingly going out of his way to hide the fact he was a programme seller) selling programmes - and he didn’t have many - outside turnstiles 4-6 (east stand south entrance). None available either in the club shop or in the foyer area outside the club shop/ticket collection point/by the hospitality reception desk. Bizarre. It was a 28-pager, by the way.

At Widnes, there will be a monthly - printed - magazine, We are Widnes (£3). It is being produced by Widnes Independent Supporters Society Ltd (WISSL)

First issue available, from the club shop, at tomorrow's Workington game. It's a special issue, celebrating the life of former player Liam Walsh.

No mention of a programme in tomorrow's match day guides for the games at Bradford and Halifax. Whitehaven have confirmed there'll be no programme at the Recre this season. Nothing at Dewsbury, London or Workington last week. Nothing yet publicised by Featherstone. Newcastle never bother. After a flirtation with a digital 'programme' (I use the inverted commas advisedly), Batley seem to have given up.

For last Sunday's Whitehaven game, Leigh issued a printed programme (£3.50).

So far, it looks like the tier two issuers will be Barrow (£2), Leigh (£3.50), Widnes (£3) and York (£3).

Sheffield have issued in recent seasons. Fair chance they may again (when, in a few weeks, they get to play at home!).

I watched Newark Football Club this afternoon. They play in the United Counties League's Premier Division North (that's level nine of the English football pyramid). Sixty spectators or so. A 28-page printed programme sold for £2.

Leeds have confirmed details of the programme arrangements for 2022 - the programme itself looks essentially unchanged from last year.

Home delivery is available; I did this last year but only because it was the only way to get the programmes they produced for games behind closed doors. It usually arrived a couple of days after the game; I'd rather have it with me at the ground so I'll just buy on the day this time round.
