Solstice

Recommended Posts

Solstice. One of my favourite days of the year. We know we've got the worst of winter to come, but the climb towards springtime starts at 15.58 hrs today.... the time the northern hemisphere of the earth's tilt turns back towards the sun.... soon have the crocus' up...

As a rule, I don't do symobols/tokens etc, but I love this day. Something about today right lifts my mood.

Happy yuletide folks😊

Went along the coast from Hilston to Withernsea via Tunstall this morning. Nice to be out in the hazy winter sun but it was a bit bloomin' raw. One of those days when you can't wait to get in front of a real fire.

Yep a date celebrated since human’s became aware, and absolutely nothing at all to do with the mythical birth of someone in the Middle East.

Decent walk . Beach can change over a couple of tides along that stretch of coast .  Quicker if a big sea is running . Cliffs very unstable at this time of year , caution required . Worse ways to spend your morning .👍

And it`s not hard to imagine why either is it ? For thousands and thousands of years people were  probably cooped up cheek by jowl inside their round house with the animals and the in-laws for months on end _ that would be earthy to say the least - who wouldn`t celebrate knowing that longer days were on the way with fresh air and sunshine.

The roots of feasting at this time of year are quite pragmatic. In high Northern latitudes Nothings grows now for the next 2 months, so you have to survive till spring. This means that in all likely hood you do not have enough fodder to keep all your animals, so slaughter the excess livestock and feast heartily since the birth of the new year is upon us.

I`d imagine for thousands of years folk would have become expert in calculating how many stock they could go into winter with, the number being largely determined by the success of the harvest that year. Not much different to farming now of course.

Just like the women would have known exactly how much everyone got to eat each day ( given the amounts they had stored ) to see them through the winter and until they could start to forage again when the weather allowed.

It would be a very poorly organised community that allowed itself to run out of food and have to start to rely on eating their breeding stock but yes no doubt some animals were probably marked down for slaughter to see them through that time.

I cycled out there so can't claim to have done the walk I'm afraid. On the subject of unstable cliffs I used to love the ride along the seaside road from Hilston to Tunstall. Sadly, as you'll no doubt know, the bend in the road fell into the sea quite a few years back, cutting it in two. Still worth a detour down Pasture Road to the cliff edge on a sunny day though. The sea view over the rolling fields is superb.

I’m spiritual but not religious if you get it?

This is a poem to Mithras who’s birthday is the winter solstice, it’s always struck a chord with me

I am That I am,
The flame
hidden in the sacred ark.
I am the unspoken name,
I the begotten
spark, I am he that lifteth up life,
And
flingeth it afar;
I have filled the crystal cup,
I have sealed the
 the crystal star
I am the wingless god that flieth
Through my
firmamental fane.
I am he that daily dieth, and is daily born
again.

No , but I generally spend about 9 months of the year wearing shorts , funnily enough my son's recently acquired mother in law has just started as a ' postie ' , her dream job apparently , a very fit lady who does marathons
