West Wales Raiders - laughing stock

Oh dear. Forfeiting tomorrow's match. Official reason given: cannot find a match doctor. Sounds very strangr to me. Would "cannot find 17 able bodied players" have been a more honest answer?

That’s strange. The page has been deleted.

Strange indeed. The article was short, just stated the match was called off due to no match doctor, followed by a quote from Carl Hall saying soemthing to the effect of: disappointing as we were looking to build on last week's performance. Also then thanked RFL for informing them promptly.

Hate to say it but this is the deathknell of the club.
Personally i don’t think this was inherent in terms of location, just another bunch of owners who fail to understand the importance of getting the fundamentals right. There are no shortcuts.

Predictions for the future -

Crusaders RL to get a franchise for 2012 onwards -WRONG

Widnes Vikings also to get a franchise - RIGHT

Crusaders RL to do the double over Widnes and finish five places ahead of them -WRONG

Widnes Vikings NOT to dominate rugby league in years to come! STILL TO COME

I predicted they wouldn’t see the season out. There’s only so many 80 point defeats you can take as a player before you wonder what the hell the point is. The people in charge of this club have a passion for the sport but they are, I’m afraid to say, completely inept.

I’m sure this isn’t even the first time this has happened under the Raiders guise. It’s shambolic. I’m all for new places playing rugby league and the game being played in unusual places but those in charge of West Wales, by all accounts, shouldn’t be allowed to run a bath let alone a rugby league club.

I *think* any previous were in cup competitions rather than the league?

They had a team. Players are gutted.

Maybe I am naive then. But are there no other doctors in West Wales??

Well my son was supposed to play, first game back after concussion at Swinton. He showed me the team list and was raring to go. He felt they had a good chance of making an impact this week against Doncaster with some injured players fit again, and suspensions back alongside a couple of loan signings.

As for what the issue with doctors was, it might be worth waiting for a statement from WWR before jumping to conclusions.

Don't they have to be RFL approved?

It's been an issue with women's and youth matches that there has been a shortage generally.

I had travelled down from Cheltenham to watch that one. Was good to catch up with some top Newcastle fans, otherwise wasted trip.

Not as far as I know - my nephew was doctor for a few games back in 2014 when we couldn’t get our usual one. The club just signed at least two keighley players on loan so 👀👀👀👀

Current operational rules: https://www.rugby-league.com/uploads/docs/Medical Standards_2022.pdf

Must be registered with the RFL.

That could be an issue if there's been a short notice issue.

The statements where you're apologising for mucking up are the ones you should proofread closest.

Deary me, this really doesn’t take responsibility and blames everyone but themselves. The system of linking with other sports organisations should have already been in place. There’s also no apology to Doncaster club or fans.

But worst of all by a long long way…  is the continued use of black stroke around white text set against a messy coloured backdrop in Photoshop 😉🤮

They definitely had a side for Doncaster, frustrating thing is it was the one game last year they should have won and they could have had a chance if they'd turned up. No excuses for this one really, should always have a back up doctor. I vaguely remember Scorpions needed one for a game at Maesteg and they turned up a bit late but the game still went ahead as confirmed.

On the premise that the statement from WWR is actually a true account of the issue I am inclined to be sympathetic to them and disgusted by the RFL

If you put a pin in the centre of Bradford and drew a circle with a radius of fifteen miles how many clubs would that include? 9?10?If each of these had 4 accredited doctors then any one club could, if their 4 doctors all had the misfortune to die on the morning of a game then there would still be plenty of doctors of those clubs who would be within an hours travel who could cover. WWR don't have that luxury. This seems like a very good example of "force majeure"

This is a strange take. Llanelli is not in Timbuktu, and availability of a club doctor is an essential requirement of being in league 1. Not only that it's not the first time this has happened.

TBF Over the years I've been at a few 'M62' grounds/ games where the game has been delayed/ put at risk of postponement for some considerable time  due to medical issues - be it lack of Doctor , incorrect meds or issues with defib machines, so WWR aren't alone in that respect .

The Raiders have a issued a pretty detailed statement , which accepts their own failings on some points but it also does ask questions on the Governing Body's handling of the situation.

In terms of the RFL - before they throw the book at WWR maybe look a bit closer to home,

 Women's Super League double-header postponed | LoveRugbyLeague

Didn't see the uproar when two SL Games (Mens or Womens it really shouldn't be treated any differently ) in the Heartlands , in an RFL organised' Double - Header ' was called off for lack of medical staff last season .
