Herbie farnworth

Recommended Posts

I watched this lad five or six times on sky last year

Real class

Coming to the end of his broncos contract and tge Dolphins are apparantly offering 500,000 aussie dollars a year

I also see Union may approach him

What a significant error this would be for a lad who has lived and fullfilled his dream

Id like to see him in a GB shirt

Its so important we get our GB brand and tours back to allow playets like Herbie to showcase their talent on a national scale

Or he can just play for England this years World Cup and showcase his talents on a national scale.

agreed.. the GB brand isnt needed (and I love the shirt etc).. just a proper international schedule, planned years in advance (and stuck to), that is all!

The top two SL specialist centres, Percival and King, should be first choice IMO.

Is Farnworth a better player individually? Possibly. But will he be as motivated to win for ‘his’ country as the aforementioned? Possibly not. He certainly won’t be able to spend as much time in camp with the rest of the squad.

Some pretty huge assumptions there.

Standing out in a side that’s been as bad as Brisbane have the past couple of seasons is quite an achievement. I’ve wanted to see Farnworth in a stronger side to see how good he’d be in a side like that and I think there’s likely to be some more improvement in Brisbane in 2022, so it will be interesting again to see how he develops and how he handles the speculation about him leaving.

As an aside, I’ve always associated with the GB RL brand more than England RL. I think it’s most likely clouded by childhood nostalgia of my first international game being a Great Britain one and owning and loving the GB shirt I had as a child but also GB being the bigger and more important brand. While GB were playing Tri-Nations while I was growing up, England, or England A as they may have been known, were playing in that infamous game against a south sea island nation at Widnes that was farcical and was just a fight arranged as a rugby match.

I acknowledge times change, opinions move on and the non-rugby politics around it all but I liked GB and while I was a bit miffed at the time and general behaviour around the GB tour in 2019, I was excited to see GB again and was probably the most interested and excited I’ve been for an international game probably for some time; until Bennett begun disrespecting the whole thing. I’d like to say both could exist and it could be a bit of a carrot for Irish, Scottish and Welsh players who otherwise only get to play Tier One nations if there’s a World Cup but i appreciate that’s hard work to do and get everything on the same hymn sheet.

😁

Well yeah, if we were basing the selections on current form from this season and last etc. Maybe there’ll be a superstar in the making that will put those two in the shade.

My only concern with Farnworth is that he’s got the Australia borders policy as a deterrent, and I also (controversially perhaps) reckon if he was up for a potential Aus call-up he’d drop England in an instant!

Seriously? Any evidence?

No evidence, just wondering if (as mentioned in a later post) he would put up with any Aus border policies that may affect him, and would he turn down an Aus call-up in favour of England if he is eligible? Just my opinion, but I think if you could find 17 Aus-based players individually better than their UK based counterparts, would they make a team more capable and motivated than its SL equivalent. I’m not so sure, and the sound bites from Shaun Wane last year suggested he feels the same. Just pondering.

You're inferring that he's not a proper English man?? He's Burnley born and bred.

No, I’m just putting myself in his shoes.

Imagine you leave school and emigrate to Aus. You make it as a top player in the worlds top RL competition. The Aus selection board drop you a line and ask if you want to a place in the squad for Aus in the upcoming World Cup, a massive achievement bearing in the competition for places. You have a very good chance of winning that silverware and writing yourself into history as a top player in your adopted country.

Would you decline and pledge allegiance to England?

I should point out that I’m only half-English by ethnicity and even then my mum’s ‘English’ side is a bit Celtic rather than Anglo-Saxon, so maybe I’m not feeling the St George allegiance thing as much as some 😊

He doesn't qualify for Australia and never will. He was approached as a kid to play for Queensland age grade. He didn't qualify then and he doesn't now.

State of Origin eligibility rules state that a player must either be born in NSW or Queensland or reside there before their 13th birthday to represent their respective state.

That’s SOO Rules.

I think if you’re an Aus citizen or parents you can play for Aus. Pretty sure. But maybe he’s on an extended work visa, rather than an actual citizen. Not sure on that TBH.

He's not emigrated, or adopted Australia as his country. He's a professional athlete playing in the best comp in the world. His parents are English living near Burnley. He's not an Australian citizen. He won't be playing for anyone other than England.

Not me. I think it’s the sunshine. I like warmer places, and I like islands.

I’m thinking of switching fan-allegiance to Greece. Much better food too, no? 😁

Not yet convinced by Farnworth, I just don't subscribe to all this "he plays in the NRL so he's a superstar and is international quality" guff.

The lad looks to have some good basic skills and seems to be getting better each year, but i'm yet tp see anything ' x-factor' about him that really marks him out against other centres. Its also a bit unfortunate for him that he's been playing in an awful Bronco's side, arguably one of the worst in their history so his opportunities to shine have been fairly limited (that said guys like Tesi Niu really stood out in the same awful side).

So for me the jury is still out on Farnworth. I hope he continues to develop and become a top class centre for England / GB, but he's quite a way from that yet. Personally I also think if he's to take the next step he needs to leave the Bronco's and be in an environment where they're used to winning. The likes of the Storm, Roosters or Bunnies would help him massively with his development compared to the Bronco's.

Then my bad. I thought his time in Aus was too long to be temporary, isn’t he now 22?

So if he’s not eligible for Aus I’ve wasted your time with this discussion.

Unless of course, they offer him a place in the squad AND citizenship. But that’s for an Aus Immigration thread.

As a saints fan, do you rate Percival? Although he was hot and cold in 2020 I’ve always thought of him as proven GB/Eng class. King has played consistently well during the the last two years, whilst Connor seems a bit inconsistent and needs to steady his temperament. Hardaker still has the class despite the off field stuff and Wigan’s form.

I’d certainly have Percy, King and Hardaker above Farnworth. Maybe Connor if he settles a bit this year. Depends where Hodgson plays him too. Newman isn’t far off either.

Pretty good I’d say , certainly in relation to some options in recent times
