When looking at the Wigan ticket page, one of the first things you see about tonight's game is an apology from the club as not all members have received their season ticket yet.

When coupled with the weird kit launch you do have to ask what they are doing in the off season.

That’s really poor from them

Kris Radlinski is so far out of his depth as CEO. He has struggled with all the metrics it takes to make a club successful and was a lazy, unambitious appointment from Wigan. Player recruitment and retention has been weird (including trying to re-sign everyone who left for a period of time). Crowds have declined sharply and the club just hasn't felt as vibrant as one of the famous clubs in the world should be.

Hopefully, a new coach and fit squad can help.

Too much. I have read the Wigan programme is £4. What is Lenegan doing. Getting some money in to pay for all their top end signings ?.

I think wigan will shock a lot of teams this year

To be fair Leeds’ falling crowds are being a bit over stated IMO take covid out of it and the couple of years when the stadium was being redeveloped they’ve  consistently hovered around 14-15k average for a decade and I expect is to get that this year

good article here, Wigans decline is worrying

I agree, and unbelievably it’ll be our 4th home game before we get our preferred 1st choice Friday night home game. With the 1st v Wire on Sat, 2nd v Catalans Thurs, and 3rd v Hull also Thurs.

No doubt on here they’ll be people saying Leeds attendances are down on previous years without taking that into account.

Ticket sales look pretty grim for the Wigan game tonight https://embed.futureticketing.ie/c/wigan-warriors/

I hope it is people being put off by the weather conditions and not a sign of things to come this season for Wigan. Shame the weather has impacted the first game.

That’s disappointing on the back of a good win at Hull KR with some nice tries.

I guess it’s understandable in one sense given the weather warnings and the fact it is on TV too.

Wigan-Leeds has to be one of their bigger games though so they’ll be gutted with the timing.

Not for the first time, a February season start is coinciding with the worst weather of the winter.

Surely, only the truly committed are turning out.

Geographically, my nearest team are York. Their second most attractive home game of the regular season is on Sunday, against Leigh. I'd pencilled it in as one to watch. But the weather forecast says 80 per cent chance of heavy rain and winds approaching 50mph. I doubt I'll bother.

But that's the hand that Super League has to deal with. It's not an excuse

SL clubs get a massive slice of their income from TV. You can't then use the TV schedule as an excuse for lower than anticipated crowds. You've got to find a way to get crowds in.

I'm not picking on Leeds, because this is something we hear from most SL clubs. Even Leigh fans are doing it now because they have to play a couple of games on Mondays.

'We would get bigger crowds if we could have all our games when it suits us' (whether it is Friday night or Sunday afternoons).

Well, you know what - he who pays the piper calls the tune.

Bottom half. They don't sign players like a elite club anymore. On the whole, That is.

That’s a great Challenge Cup attendance figure for a Championship club. I believe this is more than Salford got for their home Challenge Cup fixture against Widnes last year.

4500 at Featherstone Salford would like that too.

I agree sky funds our game and we need that money just as we need to exposure offered from the channel 4 deal, but the fact is Thursday night games will have a lower attendance than the Friday night equivalent. I am fine with that, although it could be argued with 3 of our first 5 home games on a Thursday Leeds have more than our fair share or more than any other club. I’m just saying you can’t then be critical of attendances lower than previous years. Leeds will still have the best home attendance in each of the rounds no doubl.

And so they should, Leeds is by far the biggest town/city of all SL clubs.

I think what always needs to be remembered here is that these discussions are always driven by us RL fans who focus too much on crowds.

The clubs are cracking on taking the money, delivering the crowds that they do, accepting that Thursday night doesn't work for their family based approach that other slots maybe do.

But you can't just ignore the fact that Thursday night is harder to draw a crowd, and we see this across many sports, it isn't a unique RL problem. Getting a lower crowd due to TV scheduling has always been a thing, it's not an excuse its a feature of selling your rights for all but the biggest events.

no promotion from wigan whatsoever, lots of fans haven't even received their season tickets yet those that have some have got wrong names on them! complete shambles at the ticket office, wigan carrying on where they left off last season.

I can barely define the shape of this moment in time(roger waters)

Sadly I don’t think the wire one will break the magical 5 figure barrier.

Yes it looks i was well wide of the mark with that gate. I thought there was a good following from Cas with it being a Thursday night.

Saints have sold their allocation of 900, obviously not that many have been out off by having to pay £4 more than the Hull fans stuck in the corner cheap seats https://www.saintsrlfc.com/2022/02/17/saints-sell-out-allocation-for-hull-trip/

I was going to go with my mates, but having to pay £28 put us off. The weather is another good reason to give it a miss.

I don’t blame you. I hate the wind more than the rain, but when it’s gales & heavy rain that is a mare. It’s better staying in.

How many sports routinely play on weeknights, other than football, PDC darts (and some smatterings of cricket)? Football gates tend to hold up fairly well on weeknights depending on the draw of the fixture (and remember that RL fans don't have anywhere near the same travel commitments that football fans do for away fixtures), whilst the PDC sells out 13-15k arenas across the country for the Premier League on Thursday nights. Most other sports generally seem to avoid school nights (Friday excluded).

I would argue that this issue has come about because RL has really struggled to diversify its audience from the one it traditionally speaks to. There must be people out there, living in RL land, looking for some form of entertainment on a Thursday or Monday night, so the question is around whether RL is doing enough to attract those people, or offering what those people want.

The cinema industry did exactly this with Wednesday nights, turning it from the worst-performing night of the week into the second best night, simply by tapping into a new audience with the right incentives.

If RL wants the Sky dollar and if Sky wants us to play on Thursdays in exchange for that dollar, then "Thursday nights" needs to be consigned to the same bin as "they bring no away fans" for why crowds are below expectations.

But your last para is exactly what I'm saying. The clubs are not using this excuse. It's fans moaning. Crowds will be lower on Thursday nights (and I have been to many major football games with empty seats in midweek), its people who won't accept this and maintain expectations at the levels of what they were before Thursday games were introduced.

But you can't spend 20 years focusing on being the choice for families and then playing on Thursdays and maintaining those crowds. But clubs know this and accept the money. It's fans who then moan that the crowd is down. Of course it is, not a cat in hells chance that you are getting all those kids who are part of your fan base on those nights.

I agree people need to stop blaming Thursday nights, but the only ones doing at are professional seat counters on places like this. Clubs are just cracking on with it.

Take away the Cas fans and under 8k Wire fans turned out for their first home game of the season. Pretty hard to dress it up as anything other than disappointing.
