The interpretations have been tightened considerably this year as a part of the RFL's campaign to reduce brain damage in later life. Players will (should) quickly learn what is no longer acceptable.

As someone who refs low level RU who did this tightening 2-3 seasons ago, the mitigations for Butterworth would be.

1. Opponent stepped him.

2. The contact wasn't with great force.

I'd had given it a yellow card. If that's a red card, then pretty much any contact with the head will be a red card.

As someone who referees you will also know that he has to make a quick decision based upon what he sees, not by watching a video. I feel that referees need to err towards player protection at all times, preferably by outlawing all head contact.

Sport, amongst other things, is a dream-world offering escape from harsh reality and the disturbing prospect of change.

Even so BSJ it didn’t seem as bad as the high tackle undertaken by the Warrington player in Saturdays clash with the Rhinos and he didn’t  get a red🤪

Comparing two completely different matches and expecting exactly the same interpretation is asking a lot NickD. You even argue with yourself on some threads, after all!

Aye.  Consistency is vastly overrated and incredibly dull.     The jeopardy of not knowing from one match to the other what a referee might decide definitely adds to the excitement

Having watched the highlights both the sending off for Reiss and the 10 mins for Sykes seemed pretty harsh??

Thanks for the article.

High tackles are outlawed.RU starts with all head contact as a red card and then you mitigate it down. Looks like RL not quite as harsh.

Did Butterworth go to head tackle him? No, he was running straight at him so couldn't have high tackled him if player hadn't stepped him.

So was Butterworth reckless? Yes.

Did he hit him with any force? No

Reckless with limited force = yellow

The only thing I can think is that he hit him with a clenched fist. We will see what the Disciplinary Committee has to say.

Oliver Holmes one?

Initial impact was on the shoulder and slid up around the neck.

Reckless or maybe ref saw it as careless? with force but no head contact, which got him a yellow.

Be banned for the cup game if he’s banned

It's confusing as fluk

Thanks guys👏👏👏

SL players are full time so don't need to take time off from their regular jobs in order to attend an appeal hearing. Most players below SL still have regular jobs outside of the game so need to organise time off if they wish to appeal. Naturally, this means that it costs Championship players money in lost wages to make an appeal, unlike SL players. This is one reason why SL players can get additional matches added to their bans for frivolous appeals.

In relation to each round of Championship, League 1, or Challenge Cup matches solely involving Championship or League 1 teams, or Academy matches, the Panel meet on the Thursday following the Round in question and consider any incidents that have been reported by Match Officials or otherwise brought to the attention of the Panel. There are only 2 side members in attendance for these Panel meetings. For the final week of the season and during the play-offs, all competitions are dealt with in accordance with the timetable usually in operation within Super League.
