RFL / Sport England - £11.9m over 5 years

Recommended Posts

Rugby league to get £11.9m from Sport England in the next funding cycle. Primarily to boost community participation and support active living but also with some funds for the national teams.

EDIT

Compares to £10.75m in 2017-20 (four years) but, as they say in the press release, the model of funding from Sport England has changed.

Has it ever really been possible to compare on a like-for-like basis?

The constant changes every single round seems odd from SE.

Seems decent enough, how does our funding compare to other sports?

It's the largest announced in this wave. (Do remember that other sports will get Sport England funding in either different waves or under different programmes plus will have access to UK Sport etc).

At least we can actually use this for England RL across all levels. In 2019 we had this awkward pretence about England RL when we were actually trying to revive a GB RL model at elite level and bin England RL for a year.

Sport England isn't ever really meant to be an elite sport funder so there will always be odd hoops even when they directly fund NGBs. The priorities are nearly always about active lifestyle and, as far as they're concerned, the actual sport involved and the competition 'performance' returns on that are secondary.

But our brand and history is GB
