Not really. Entirely dependent on the direction of the ball after contact.

Let me rephrase  -

Every other deliberate play at the ball by hand or arm which results in the ball travelling towards the opposition dead-ball line is a knock-on.

This revised version makes precisely zero difference to the fact that the charge down is exempt from the knock-on rule.

BTW, I nearly omitted the proviso "by hand or arm". Thought it might seem excessively pedantic. Turned out to be not pedantic enough.

It wasn't really excessively pedantic or not pedantic enough.

It was just wrong.

It's OK to admit that.

I did, by rephrasing the point.

On the substance - what are the benefits to the game from restarting the tackle count following a charge down?

Genuinely interested to know why you prefer the current rule.

I think it is the right balance of risk and reward.  Simple as that.

Thanks guys, interesting discussion.

My thoughts align with Dunbar. If you play at the ball and the opposition recover it, then that should be a restart. A good balance; risk and reward is exactly it. In fact, you play at the ball as it's not held in possession, so it doesn't sound right to me that there isn't a restart.

As to whether it should be a knock on, that is also interesting. Not giving it is as a knock on is an exception of course, but sometimes that makes a sport more interesting.

It’s a fantastic ground that creates a cracking atmosphere & has certainly boosted the Roosters attendance’s.

Some really awful defence in the Dolphins - Titans game, but what a comeback. Also one of the most bizarre bombed tries I have ever seen from Jennings.
