The NRL has revived talks about staging a historic premiership game in the United States next year, which could see Manly take on South Sydney to open the 2023 season.

Sources with knowledge of discussions told the Herald that Sea Eagles owner Scott Penn has been pushing the NRL to reopen discussions to play a game in Los Angeles - plans which previously fell through when the governing body attempted to make it work for the 2019 season.

South Sydney boss Blake Solly has backed the NRL’s potential move into the United States.

“We had discussions a few years ago with the NRL about that potential game to open the season in the US,” Solly told the Herald.

“It didn’t come off then but we’ve always been interested in any opportunity to expand the game in the US provided its part of a long-term strategy from the NRL to continue playing in America. We also have the links to America with owners Russell Crowe and Mike Cannon-Brookes, who has sporting interests [as a part-owner of the NBA’s Utah Jazz] in the US.

“We’ve also played a game there against Leeds in Jacksonville. We’ve always been supporters of an expanded World Club Series, so anything to grow the profile of rugby league and the Rabbitohs we are willing to entertain.”

ARL Commission chairman Peter V’landys has outlined the potential for a massive revenue boost from the rapidly growing US betting market – wagering is now legal in half of America’s 50 states – potentially alongside a fixture played in North America.

Manly’s major sponsor, PointsBet, which also has naming rights for Shark Park, has aggressively immersed itself in the American market, and uses retired NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal and golf influencer Paige Spiranac to promote its offerings.

There needs to be a proper plan for North American expansion...one that is followed through and well thought out.   The beachhead has been made and established in Toronto but was abandoned.   Having big one off games in large markets is fine but will whither on the vine unless followed up.

Honolulu Hawaii would be a great place to stage it with the view of establishing an NRL team there one day.

I would also like to see a deal done between The NRL & The NFL, where a couple of games of NFL are played in Australia & a couple of games of NRL are played in the USA every year.

Great idea but I think the NFL see Europe especially London as a bigger market than Australasia.
