Tony Smith to leave Hull KR at the end of the season

Recommended Posts

That's a real shame, it seemed a perfect fit between club and coach but obviously something has gone wrong. Just hope the next man in carries on the good work and we get to see more of the great rugby KR play.

This makes the outstanding interview with him just released on the BBC RL podcast even more interesting. He knew (presumably) who would get the Leeds job and Dave Woods didn't press the issue of a new Hull KR contract presumably because he thought it'd be a formality.

He hints at stuff in the interview but nothing which would make you think here's a bloke about to quit.

Replacing Brett Hodgson at Hull FC, we have a load of spare cash to entice him…

Could you imagine the gnashing of teeth on here among our red and white brethren if that happened.

Rugby Union the only game in the world were the spectators handle the ball more than the players.

Tony Smith is a good coach but when you sign him he comes with a big ego which needs constant massaging.

Neil Hudgell and Paul Lakin are creating a legacy that will last for decades and there will no doubt be other comings and goings along the way.

It remains to be seen if the club will allow Smith to remain at the club for the remainder of the season.

My money would be on he will leave before seasons end

I've got two theories.

One - he's tried to do something and has been over-ruled by the owner/manager, so it's an insurmountable conflict.

Two - He's off to Leeds to mentor his nephew after an approach by Gary Hetherington, all done with HKR's blessing.

Really?, that's the first I've ever heard of anyone having a bad word about the guy.

Can you remember when you've criticised him in the past and point out when you said it?

The slimeball hetherington written all over it

The only input Hetherington might have had in this is that Smith's experiences of how a pro Rugby League club is run with him at the helm didn't match up to whatever has been going on at Hull KR.

Smith is clearly his own man and would not be manipulated, in my opinion,  by Hetherington or anyone else for that matter. Something at Hull KR must have created a situation that Smith found unacceptable,  which is a shame, as him leaving will seriously affect the momentum at the club next season.

So they will sack him? On what basis?
